The Synod of Bishops on the family concluded this weekend. As I have been reporting, the Synod Fathers worked hard during these past three weeks. Last month Chelsea Clinton released a book entitled “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going.” This book is about young people all over the world who are making positive changes to benefit others, including the environment, and humanitarian causes. I took a delegation of students from San Gabriel Mission High School to this book signing in order to gain valuable cultural education, give them the chance to meet a “First Daughter” of the United States, and provide them the opportunity to witness a young woman who is using her influence to provide positive messages of hope to those who will listen. Ms. Clinton was down to earth, sweet, and genuine; she was also receptive, interested in the students, and seemed eager to please, in the hopes that we might even be able to use the book in our school. Yolanda Sanchez, a junior, affirmed the experience as a valuable one, saying, “It was important to me to meet someone who was so inspired at my age. It really helped to see what I could do in the world because at times I question, ‘what could I possibly do?’”

ROME — A leading champion for immigrant rights among the US bishops said Tuesday he’s disappointed that the Oct. 4-25 Synod of Bishops on the family hasn’t dedicated more attention to the issue, saying that many people are hoping the summit of prelates from around the world will be “more assertive.”
