Today, on the Feast Day of St. Juan Diego whom the Virgin Mary appeared to miraculously in 1531, more than 30,000 faithful from Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties danced, sang and prayed down East Los Angeles streets to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the Americas, at the 87th annual procession and Mass of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The theme of this year’s celebration was “Our Lady of Guadalupe: The light of peace in justice.” During the homily Archbishop José H. Gomez reflected on recent tragedies this year including the wildfires and shootings and said: “we have many reasons for tears, many reasons for doubt and sadness. But God our Heavenly Father is with us! Our Blessed Mother, the Virgin of Guadalupe is with us!” (full text of bilingual homily follows) Today’s celebration leads up to the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, and marks the second week of Advent, a season of preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The mile-long route of the oldest religious procession in Los Angeles, included colorful floats, equestrian groups, mariachis and indigenous dancers. Catholic school students escorted La Peregrina, the official Archdiocesan pilgrim image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which has been blessed and touched to the original image. Awards were given to three floats that most creatively depicted this year’s theme – St. Charles Borromeo in North Hollywood (first), St. Bernard Parish in Bellflower (second), and St. Marcellinus in Commerce and St. Rosa Lima in Maywood (tied for third). The pilgrimage and procession are possible because of the collaboration and participation of parish communities throughout the entire Archdiocese. Many wore red and green attire to resemble the flag of Mexico, where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego. The procession ended at East Los Angeles College Stadium in Monterey Park, where Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrated a special Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Mass featured a mixed choir from St. Linus Church in Norwalk, St. John Chrysostom in Inglewood, and Our Lady of Lourdes in East LA singing traditional Mariachi songs in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In preparation for today’s procession and Mass in East LA, the framed traveling images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego visited various parishes and schools for veneration in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The images were also venerated at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard during the celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in November. This year marks the 487th anniversary when the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Mexican indigenous St. Juan Diego in 1531, and asked him to build a church on a hilltop, miraculously leaving her image on his cloak, or tilma as proof of her request to the bishop at that time. Since then, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion and hope for people around the world. What a blessing it is to be children of Tepeyac, sons and daughters of such a Mother! She is always our mother and she leads us always to Jesus — who shows us the face of our loving Father. At the same time, this has been a year in which our community has seen wildfires and mass shootings. And also in the Church, we have seen the sadness of scandal. Yes, my brothers and sisters, it is true. We have many reasons for tears, many reasons for doubt and sadness. But God our Heavenly Father is with us! Our Blessed Mother, the Virgin of Guadalupe is with us! ¿No estás bajo mi sombra y resguardo? Let us ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to help us today. She is the face of God’s love. In her gaze, in her sensitive and passionate eyes — we see all the love that God has in his heart for each one of us. Her sweet and immaculate heart will provide the path for us! Believe this, my brothers and sisters! All for the good! Everything is working for the good of those who love God, although sometimes our minds cannot grasp God’s plan or see it clearly. God wants to become human. This is what this holy season of Christmas, this is what the Incarnation, is all about. We hear in this promise in the Gospel today: “All flesh shall see the salvation of God.” ####
