Pope Francis today named Msgr. Marc V. Trudeau from Los Angeles auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Archbishop José H. Gomez and the bishop-elect addressed local media on the Pope’s announcement at a press conference today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles.

Archbishop Gomez began the press conference by addressing the Papal announcement on the newly appointed auxiliary bishop and introducing Bishop-elect Trudeau, saying, “I know he is going to be, as Pope Francis likes to say, ‘a shepherd who knows the smell of his sheep.’”

“As a priest, our Bishop-elect has always had a heart for his people. He is close to them in their joys and sorrows and in the challenges they face in their everyday lives,” added Archbishop Gomez. “Being a bishop in the Catholic Church is not like any ordinary ‘job.’ For us, every bishop is a living sign of Jesus — who loves us, who is alive with us, and who is walking with us on the journey of our lives.”

Bishop-elect Trudeau was ordained to the priesthood in 1991. A native of Los Angeles, he has served as parochial vicar at St. James the Less Parish in La Crescenta from 1991-1995 and St. Philip the Apostle in Pasadena from 1995-2001. Bishop-elect Trudeau was named pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Santa Fe Springs where he served from 2001-2004. Bishop-elect Trudeau served as priest secretary to Cardinal Roger Mahony from 2004-2010 and pastor of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish in Lomita from 2010-2013. He joined the faculty at St. John’s Seminary as Vice Rector and Assistant Director of Pastoral Formation in 2013. Bishop-elect Trudeau has served as Rector of St. John’s Seminary since 2014.

“Born and raised in L.A., I feel blessed to have been able to minister in my home. This local community of faith reflects our universal Catholic Church in its beautiful diversity and the conviction to serve the needs of their sisters and brothers,” said Bishop-elect Trudeau. “I am most grateful to His Holiness, Pope Francis for entrusting with me this new role of service to the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I look forward to working with Archbishop Gomez and my brother bishops, priests, religious and ecclesial leaders, and learn from them and their experience, to continue to do my best to serve our catholic faithful and all the communities that our church serves in Southern California, especially those most in need.”

Bishop-elect Trudeau is a Hollywood-born former dentist who worked at Vons for more than a decade to put himself through school, he graduated twice from USC, and has survived cancer. To learn more about Bishop-elect Trudeau, visit http://angelusnews.com/BishopElectTrudeau.
