PILGRIMAGE OF RELIC OF SANTO TORIBIO, BELOVED SAINT OF IMMIGRANTS, KICKS OFF SO. CALIFORNIA TOUR AT ST. MARCELLINUS PARISH
July 7, 2014  |  By:   |  Press Releases  |

A press conference will be held July 7 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Marcellinus Church in City of Commerce (2349 Strong Ave., Los Angeles, 90040) to kick off the first Southern California tour of the relic of Santo Toribio, beloved saint of immigrants and border crossers, before arriving at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on July 20 for a special Mass in Recognition of Immigrants.

The relic, a bone from the left ankle of Santo Toribio, is encased in a 4-foot-5 statue of the saint, which was lent to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by the saint’s home chapel in Jalisco, Mexico. The Mexican-born martyred priest is venerated by immigrants for helping them reach the “dreamed land” safely and achieving success in the United States.

“Santo Toribio was a holy priest, a friend to the poor, and a man who loved Jesus so much that he was ready to die for him,” said Archbishop José Gomez. “This pilgrimage of his relic gives us all a chance to ask his prayers for our families, especially for our immigrant brothers and sisters as they seek the promise of America and to live with the dignity that God intends for them.”

The press conference will be followed with a 6:30 p.m. Mass, worship and veneration at St. Marcellinus Church, where the relic will remain through the evening of July 9. The relic will travel to five other parishes, including Santiago de Compostela Church in Lake Forest, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Indio and Sacred Heart Church in Rancho Cucamonga.

Born in 1900, Toribio Romo was a Catholic priest and martyr during the Cristero War, an uprising against Mexico’s anti-Catholic government. He was killed in 1928 by federal troops for defending his religious faith. He was canonized on May 21, 2000, by Pope John Paul II.
