The 2013 celebration in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

(555 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, 90012) will be held on the eve of her Feast Day, December 11.

The annual celebration recalls the miraculous apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego at

Tepeyac, Mexico in December 1531, when she left her image on his tilma or cloak.

The festivities will begin at 8 p.m. with Aztec dancers paying homage to the Blessed Mother on the

Cathedral Plaza. At 10 p.m., the celebration continues inside the Cathedral for a special Rosary,

which will include prayers led by Emmy nominated actress and producer Roma Downey and other

invited guests accompanied by the Cathedral Spanish Choir.

At 11 p.m., 2009 America’s Got Talent runner-up Barbara Padilla, international young singing

sensation Rubén Sandoval, “El Canario de Oro,” Mexican award-winning singer Miriam Solis and

noted LA singer Jacky Ibarra, will join Cathedral soloists Dalia Rodriguez and Delia Rios to serenade

the Virgin of Guadalupe and sing “Las Mañanitas,” a traditional Mexican birthday song that is sung

to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe on her feast day. They will be accompanied by Mariachi Estrellas

de Mexico. The festivities will conclude with a midnight Mass celebrated by Archbishop José H.

Gomez.

The 2013 Cathedral Guadalupe Celebration is co-presented by the Knights of Columbus, the world’s

largest Catholic fraternal organization. The images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego at the

celebration will be adorned by a gift of roses by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, producers of the

upcoming feature film SON OF GOD, and Guadalupe RadioTV. The celebration will be transmitted

internationally in Spanish by EWTN Español.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is home to the only relic in the United States of the

Tilma of St. Juan Diego where the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously appeared almost 500 years

ago. Given the natural agave fibers used to make the Tilma, experts say it is nothing short of

miraculous that the relics at the Cathedral in Los Angeles, and the rest of the Tilma in Mexico City,

have survived for almost five centuries. The cloth should have disintegrated hundreds of years ago.
