As part of the ongoing celebrations for the “Forward in Mission” Jubilee Year commemorating 250 years of Catholic faith in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, all are invited to “Open Hearts, Open Doors: A Jubilee Posada” on Saturday, December 18 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. Festivities for the entire family will include a candlelight procession on the Cathedral Plaza, prayer service, caroling, refreshments, a ballet folklórico performance, and a nativity photo booth.

“Las Posadas is a pilgrimage with Mary and Joseph in search of shelter or ‘posada,’” said Father Parker Sandoval, Vice Chancellor of the Archdiocese and a lead organizer of the jubilee year. “As we journey with them, we remember the people in our society who, like the Holy Family, find closed doors. We will pray for the grace to open the doors of our heart to the vulnerable, and above all, to Jesus who identifies himself with them. Above all, the ‘Forward in Mission’ Jubilee Year is a special time to open wide the doors of our hearts to Jesus.”

All who attend are welcome to bring a new, unwrapped toy or retail gift card as a gift for a needy family. Families in attendance can enjoy pan dulce, champurrado and piñatas donated by Vallarta Supermarkets.

“At Christmas, we will exchange gifts with family and friends,” added Father Sandoval. “The Jubilee Posada is an opportunity to give to members of our extended spiritual family who struggle in this time of crisis.”

Las Posadas is an Advent tradition from Mexico that occurs on each of the nine days before Christmas.  Each night of the novena, families form a procession commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. They come to closed door after closed door until they finally find an open door offering posada.

During this Jubilee Year, the faithful are encouraged to go on pilgrimage to designated sites, one of which is the Cathedral, to pray and obtain special blessing. The full list of pilgrimage sites across the tri-county Archdiocese including Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties is available at forwardinmission.com/pilgrimage-sites.
