The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles is holding open auditions for its adult English and Spanish choirs starting today. The Cathedral is committed to promoting a high-quality sacred music program that leads Cathedral congregations to “full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14), and embodies the Cathedral’s mission of being a welcoming community of prayer, worship and service.

The Cathedral adult choirs, under the direction of Joe Bazyouros, serve the liturgical life of the Cathedral by singing on Sundays and on special Solemnities and diocesan celebrations.

“Choirs have a long-standing history with Cathedral churches. Joining the choirs at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels gives a person the opportunity to step into a larger world of music ministry that serves not just the Cathedral, but the entire Church within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and beyond,” said Mr. Bazyouros, Director of Music for the Cathedral. “Singers in the choir would say that it is an experience both faith-filling and musically rewarding.”

Besides liturgical duties, this coming year the choirs will be performing John Rutter’s Requiem and G.F. Handel’s Messiah, as well as begin preparations for a tour to Rome in the early part of 2024.

The Cathedral’s sacred music program, now in its 20th year, encompasses the beautiful traditions of the Church and the multiple cultural traditions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles enhancing worship by giving voice to the glory and beauty of the liturgy.
