We’re back to school.

Catholic elementary schools and high schools all over the Archdiocese of Los Angeles started classes recently, and religious education programs are gearing up again in our parishes following the summer break.

The eucharistic revival begins

In a Mass and procession celebrated last month at the cathedral on the feast of Corpus Christi, we launched the National Eucharistic Revival, an initiative of the U.S. Catholic bishops. This revival will go on for the next two years, closing with a National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, in July 2024.

When we read the Gospels every day, we start to notice a pattern. Jesus is on a journey, and as he goes, he is encountering different people along the way. Often, as he is passing by, he sees someone and invites that person to go with him.

Proclaiming our anthropology

The Catholic novelist Walker Percy once said: “Everyone has an anthropology. There is no not having one. If a man says he does not, all he is saying is that his anthropology is implicitly a set of assumptions he has not thought to call into question.”

Lives on fire with love

On Pentecost, the Church was born in the fire of the Holy Spirit! And the Church here in Los Angeles is alive, on fire with the Spirit.

Recently, Pope Francis canonized 10 men and women, including a priest that I have long admired and talked about in my preaching and teaching, now St. Charles de Foucauld.

Everything starts with baptism’

I had the blessing of attending the Mass in Rome with Pope Francis for the opening of the 16th Synod of Bishops on the theme: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission.”

Return to the rosary

May is Mary’s month and in this Easter season we rejoice with our Blessed Mother and entrust ourselves again to her maternal love, as Jesus did.

And in this month, I want to encourage you to renew your love for Mary’s prayer, the beautiful prayer of the rosary.
