DACA: Another Chance for Political Unity

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Sept. 5 the highly anticipated decision by President Donald Trump to gradually rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, President Barack Obama’s 2012 executive order that effectively shielded 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation. While causing a firestorm of criticism, the actions of the president nevertheless open a window for a bipartisan effort to find the common good on a pressing and polarizing issue. (See story.)

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez awards special honors to a dozen San Gabriel Valley Catholics

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles bestowed special honors from Roman Catholic Church leader Pope Francis upon 54 laypersons and 15 priests under its jurisdiction in a ceremony held Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in downtown LA. Included among the recipients were 11 laypersons and one priest from the San Gabriel Valley who received medals and diplomas associated with the honors.

DIOCESE TO ASSIST WITH HARVEY RECOVERY

The Diocese of Sioux City will join others across the United States in adding a special collection, the weekend of Sept. 9-10, to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey along the Gulf Coast.

Among the most affected areas are the Diocese of Victoria and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, which is overseen by Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, former Bishop of Sioux City from 1998 to 2004.
