Auxiliary Bishop Marc V. Trudeau for the San Pedro Region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles presided a memorial Mass today to honor the lives of all those who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic today at All Souls Cemetery & Mortuary in Long Beach. Footage of the Mass is available at https://lacatholics.org/memorial-mass/.

“One of the most difficult parts of this time is the distancing and the isolation that it places us in. We are meant to be together. Even in death we gather in holy places like our cemeteries where our dead are buried reverently, and we pray for and remember our them in a very special way. In a very special way, we gather today through the internet to remember those who have died in the past month,” said Auxiliary Bishop Trudeau.

Today’s Mass is the first of a series of weekly Masses to remember the lives of those who died during the pandemic and pray for their grieving loved ones, especially those who have not been able to have a funeral Mass. The weekly Masses will be livestreamed from select locations of the Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries of the Archdiocese on the LA Catholics Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/lacatholics/.

“Jesus promises us individually and as a community that we are never alone on our own journey. Jesus promises us, human beings who are subject to death, new life in him,” said Auxiliary Bishop Trudeau. “We pray for our beloved dead especially those who were not able to have a funeral Mass due to the pandemic. We ask that God continue to hold them in his arms of mercy, in his arms of peace.”

During the memorial Mass, the names of the deceased were read, and roses were placed near the altar in their honor. The Mass also recognized those who have departed but also recognize their loved ones who grieve and mourn their loss, as many families have not been able to gather for a funeral Mass due to pandemic distancing restrictions.

“We pray that we, who are not truly isolated, are not alone in our grief but are also brought together in His promise of life and love,” said Auxiliary Bishop Trudeau. “May God give us strength and courage in this time of bereavement and grief to look on God who saves us.”
