  • Loyola ranks in top percentage of Catholic schools nationwide

    Loyola High School of Los Angeles has been rated as one of the top Catholic high schools in the nation, according to a new ranking from the school data website, Niche. Loyola was ranked number one as the best Catholic high school in California, number two as the best Catholic high school in the United States, and number four as the best All-Boys High School in the U.S. Niche combined data and community reviews to compile the rankings. More than 120,000 students and parents rated the schools in categories such as academics, teachers, student culture and diversity, as well as resources and facilities.

    Loyola High School students submitted numerous ideas for ways to celebrate the school’s sesquicentennial, including everything from a shirtless school day to a no-test month. Of the hundreds of ideas, the winner was a “mega cake” that could feed all 1,252 students.

    Luciana and Fabian Perez, parents of Cathedral Chapel School students Camila Perez and Tiago Perez, visited Rome this summer with their family and met Pope Francis. Fabian Perez is a renowned artist, originally from Argentina, who painted a portrait of Pope Francis that he personally presented to the pontiff. The Perez family trip included Camila, who is the 4th grader at Cathedral Chapel, and Tiago, who is a 1st grader, as well as their 4-year-old child, Santino.

    When Sister Mary Sean Hodges parks her metallic blue Prius in front of the aging three-story Victorian-like mansion a little before 8 o’clock, six men are already inside the front room working. The former “lifers” and long-serving prisoners are part of the Partnership for Re-Entry Program (PREP), which the Dominican Sister of Mission San Jose started in May 2002.

    On the first day of his American visit, Pope Francis wasted no time delving into difficult issues: clergy sex abuse, immigration and climate change. By the afternoon he had declared Junipero Serra a saint during a Mass before 25,000 people. And in lighter moments, he was welcomed to the White House by thousands of cheering onlookers, posed for a selfie with spectators and took a brief ride on the Ellipse in a popemobile. On Thursday he speaks to Congress.
