  • Court rules against real estate mogul who pressured nuns with ‘bad deal’

    L.A. County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Bowick ruled April 13 that the contested sale of the former convent of the Immaculate Heart of Mary religious sisters to urban developer Dana Hollister is invalid. Bowick entered an order May 2 affirming the sisters as the rightful owner of the Waverly Drive property and ordering Hollister to immediately vacate the premises.

    Judge Stephanie Bowick ruled on April 13, 2016 that the Hollister transaction was invalid and today entered an order granting summary adjudication affirming that the Hollister sale is invalid, the IHM is the rightful owner of the property, and that Hollister has no right, title or valid interest in the property.

    On April 15, the Royal Company — an extracurricular choir at Louisville High School in Woodland Hills — won first place in a competition at the Music in the Parks Music Festival. The 13 student singers, accompanied by pianist Francesco Alleruzzo and conducted by music teacher Maura Crawley, sang three classical pieces. The following day during an awards ceremony at Disneyland, the choir was awarded a first-place ranking.

    Immaculate Heart High School’s annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon on April 20 honored 109 students who participate in school sports and also maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

    On April 16, the Habitat L.A. Catholic Coalition broke ground for a house in Montebello, drawing nearly 60 volunteers from 10 local parishes. Auxiliary Bishop O’Connell attended the event, blessing both the site and the volunteers.
