Fr. Richard Hoynes, 56; Pastor of St. Francis Xavier
Fr. Richard Russell Hoynes, who served as administrator/pastor of St. Francis Xavier Chapel Japanese Catholic Center (formerly Maryknoll) in Los Angeles, passed away on Aug. 2 following an extended illness. He was 56.

Positive momentum in vocations
We both love sports. There is a curious thing in sports called momentum. It’s a mysterious phenomenon that’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it. Why is it that a team can go from being hopelessly inept at one point in a game to all of a sudden the players can do no wrong? And conversely, why is it that the other team suddenly can do nothing right? It’s vexing when you’re on the wrong side of momentum and exhilarating when it’s going your way.

I am still trying to get my mind around this year’s election.
People have been asking me: What’s going on in America? I’m not sure I have the answers. But I’ve been praying, reading and thinking a lot about the question. These are some initial reflections.

Adopt-A-Family seeks volunteers to bring Christmas to Skid Row
On Dec. 17, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program will knock on the doors of at least 500 families living in the Downtown and Skid Row areas of Los Angeles and present gift boxes filled with toys, clothes and household items.
