  • Simbang Gabi: Filipino tradition prepares the faithful to celebrate Christmas

    Hundreds of Filipinos and non-Filipinos throughout Southern California gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles, for an Advent liturgy and parade procession, reflecting one of the oldest Christmastime traditions in the Philippines.

    THERE were a lot of people at the LA Cathedral on Thursday, December 15. The rain did not stop them, mostly our kababayans, from coming to the opening Mass of Simbang Gabi. By the time that representatives of different Filipino organizations and ministries paraded their parols,  accompanied by the triumphant voices of choir members from Our Lady of the Angels Region, the church was packed wall to wall.

    The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has elected its first Latino as their vice president, Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gómez. The election took place on Tues., Nov. 15, in Baltimore. The new officers’ term begins at the end of January, shortly after Donald Trump assumes office.

    Two figures dressed as Mary and Joseph made their way down the center aisle of Vancouver’s Holy Rosary Cathedral. At various points, they stopped and asked a parishioner playing the part of an innkeeper for a place to stay. Invariably the reply was negative. Finally, the two figures reached the foot of the altar and asked the congregation if they had any room for Christ. The congregation said they did have room for Christ, and only then did the entrance procession for the first Simbang Gabi Mass of the year begin.
