On the synodal path
I am writing these words to you this week from Rome, the Eternal City.
Yesterday, on Oct. 10, I had the privilege to join the Holy Father Pope Francis as he opened the 16th Synod of Bishops with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square. On Oct. 31, I will open the archdiocesan phase of the synod with a Mass I will celebrate at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Four priests on prayer for the busy exec
St. Teresa of Avila, the 16th-century Spanish nun and Doctor of the Church, described mental prayer—as distinct from vocal prayer, set prayers spoken by the lips—as “nothing else than an intimate friendship, a frequent heart-toheart conversation with Him by whom we know ourselves to be loved.” She added, “I am certain of it that Our Lord will eventually bring to the harbor of salvation, he who gives himself to prayer.”

The service was led by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, Reverend José Gomez and attended by parish leaders and staff, members of the San Gabriel City Council, Los Angeles dignitaries and several hundred guests and parishioners.

In Awe of All People
The Mexican-Swedish-American artist John August Swanson died in September in Los Angeles, his hometown, the city he loved. I have a special connection with him and his work. Swanson’s 2007 serigraph The Procession hangs above my ofrenda, a traditional Mexican home altar used for prayer. The serigraph was a gift from my mother-in-law, who purchased it after a visit to Los Angeles in 2019. At the time, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was hosting an exhibit of Swanson’s painting, and I was collaborating with him on a series of talks about the transformative power of art in faith and social justice. It was just months before the pandemic forced Los Angeles into its initial lockdowns.
