REDONDO BEACH SCHOOL WINS 25th annual academic junior high decathlon at L.A. Sports Arena

St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic School in Redondo Beach won the 25th Annual Academic Junior High Decathlon for the fourth year in a row at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.St. Martin of Tours Catholic School in Los Angeles was the runner-up in the competition. Both schools will advance to the state competition in late April.
The Saturday(March 7) event, which drew a record number of competingschools, included more than 1,000 students from 115 Catholicschools from the three counties–Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties—that comprise the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The daylong event, which drew thousands of spectators, included a Mass celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez
The decathlon consisted of three segments: the Logic Quiz and the Super Quiz (in which all 10 teammates participate), plus individual events (Religion, English, Literature, Science, Mathematics, Current Events, Social Studies, and Fine Arts).
The Academic Junior High Decathlon was founded by Dr. Mark Ryan, than a junior high teacher at St. Aloysius School in south-central Los Angeles, who envisioned an academic event to parallel the athletic competitions prevalent in schools. Since its inception in 1990, the Decathlon has grown from about 50 schools to more than 100 registered schools today. Dr. Ryan, now a Superintendent at North Valley Military Institute in Granada Hills, was honored at Saturday’s event.
