The door opened off a corridor and there was Pope John Paul II, sitting next to a window, reading his worn-out breviary. With a rigid neck, he had to turn his whole body standing up. And when Dr. Vincent Fortanasce put out his hand to kiss his ring, he shook it with both of his hands, smiling.

April 27 marked one of the most important days in the lives of parishioners at Our Lady of the Bright Mount west of downtown Los Angeles.

Some traveled to Rome, braving huge crowds and long flights to witness the canonization of Saints John XXIII and John Paul II. Many more celebrated back home during two Masses which honored two holy men of faith, especially their beloved countryman who visited their parish in 1976 as Cardinal Karol Wojtyla from Cracow, Poland.

A mission church in Lake Los Angeles and a parish hall in San Fernando share something in common: both will be named in honor of recently-canonized John Paul II.

It’s fitting, perhaps, that the archdiocese’s San Fernando pastoral region will be the first with parish buildings dedicated to Pope John Paul, as he visited the San Fernando Mission for five-and-a-half hours during his 1987 visit to Los Angeles. (See memoir of visit on p. 24).

During his 1976 visit to Los Angeles, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla (the future St. John Paul II) was interviewed by Tidings editor Al Antczak at Our Lady of the Bright Mount Church, where he celebrated Mass on Aug. 29. Following are excerpts from the 20-minute interview, published in The Tidings on Sept. 3, 1976.

When the 16 men celebrating their golden jubilees of priesthood this year began their religious studies, Masses were celebrated in Latin and the celebrant faced the tabernacle in an alcove along the back wall — not the congregation.

Although most of the 52 pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles could not get into St. Peter’s Square April 27, they still were able to feel the excitement surrounding the “Eternal City” for the canonization of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II.

  • We are called to be saints
    April 29, 2014  |  The Latest  |

This past weekend, we joined the universal Church in offering thanks and praise to God for our two new saints — the great 20th century popes, St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II.

Their canonizations show us that, even in our deeply secular age, the world is still moved by the example of holiness.
