The son of a San Fernando Valley grocer and the ninth of ten children, he speaks fluent Spanish, and has a twin brother living in the diocese he will lead – a 35,000 square-mile territory with about 1.2 million Catholics situated in the heart of California’s agriculture-rich San Joaquin Valley, known as America’s “salad bowl” and the “food basket for the world.”

We are praying tonight for the unborn.
This word reminds us that life begins long before we ever see it. The Bible tells us that every human life begins with the desire of God. Before he forms us in the womb, he knows who we are. He knows who he wants us to be. Even before we are born, God has plans for us.

We will be walking for life again this Saturday, Jan. 19. From our city’s first church at La Placita on Olvera Street we will march to the Los Angeles State Historic Park, proudly proclaiming the beauty and holiness of human life. -
