  • On Ash Wednesday, LA faithful begin the solemn season of Lent
February 14, 2024  |  Archbishop Gomez, In The News  |

Across the Los Angeles region, Christians are observing the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday — the day after “Fat/Shrove Tuesday” or Mardi Gras in some cultures — marks the official start of the solemn 40-day season of Lent: a time of deep prayer, repentance and sacrifice in the Christian faith, that leads to Easter. Many Catholics, evangelicals, Lutherans, and other Christian denominations traditionally observe the day with fasting, tithing, and abstaining from meat or other luxuries.

Wednesday is Valentine’s Day, a holiday widely observed by indulging in something romantic and sweet with the person you love. But many Catholics and other Christians across Southern California will be receiving a cross made of ash on their foreheads that day because it’s Ash Wednesday, whose vibe is anything but indulgent.

  • Changing the world at OneLife LA
    January 29, 2024  |  In The News  |

I know this is wishful thinking, but as I walked amid the rain and the throngs at the 10th annual OneLife LA, I wished that my friends, acquaintances, and yes, even family members, who are not pro-life, were there beside me. I thought how good it would have been for those on the opposite end of this issue to see the pro-life movement up close and personal. As has been proven countless times, when the media, the arts, and the academy are so strongly allied on the other side of this issue, being pro-life can seem like an uphill battle.
