In Cathedral, on battleship, Los Angeles celebrates Easter

While there won’t be an Easter service at the Hollywood Bowl today, the Pacific Battleship Center is attempting to begin a new Southland tradition with a sunrise service aboard the battleship Iowa.

Special services, festivals to mark Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday dawned cool and cloudy in Los Angeles ahead of several events scheduled in and around downtown to mark the Christian holiday, including a brunch of ham and jambalaya for the homeless, egg hunts and games for children, and special services in both English and Spanish for the faithful.

Hundreds of animals were brought to Olvera Street for the annual Blessing of the Animals by Archbishop Jose Gomez. The ceremony dates to the 4th century and is “held in grateful recognition of the tremendous services given to the human race by the animal kingdom,” according to church officials.
