In America, the Catholic Church is a church of many races and cultures. In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles alone, Holy Mass is celebrated in nearly 40 different languages. There are cultures that in America we still associate with Catholicism, while there are other cultures that we associate as hostile to the Catholic faith.

Although Catholic immigration advocates are disappointed that the Senate on Feb. 15 voted down multiple proposals for protecting young immigrants who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children, they say they are still holding on to hope and committed to working for a solution.

USCCB calls on Catholics to take action for Dreamers
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are urging Catholics to call Congress and demand they act on behalf of “Dreamers,” undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as minors but have been allowed to stay under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama administration policy that protected them from deportation.

Recently, I found myself in a car with two DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program recipients driving from central L.A. to Camarillo to speak to seminarians about our country’s broken immigration system. We each shared our immigration stories, but more interesting to me was the conversation about our place in this movement.
