Foster families to be recognized in Los Angeles
Archbishop José H. Gomez will celebrate the Mass in honor of Catholic foster families on Sunday, October 13 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles, to mark the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Office of Life, Justice and Peace’s first Catholic Foster Family Appreciation Day. Foster care advocates and families from parish communities are invited to join the Mass to recognize the contributions of individuals and families who help to provide a home and care for the more than 34,000 children who are part of Los Angeles’ foster care system.

A local Catholic school student’s surprising half-court shot has achieved viral glory.
Matthew Von Der Ahe is a student at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. A video posted Sept. 14 by Instagram account “HouseOfHighlights,” which features a variety of viral sports highlights, showed Matthew, who has Down syndrome, making a long-distance shot on a basketball court before being immediately mobbed in celebration by a throng of fellow students.
