Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles condemned violence and racism on Sunday and called for peaceful protests. The leader of the country’s largest Catholic diocese and the president of the U.S. bishops’ conference addressed the weekend’s violence and civil unrest, both in his Pentecost homily and in a statement released by the USCCB.

Every year, the Church seeks the special intercession of the Mother of God in the month of May. On May 1, the bishops of the United States re-consecrated our nation to Our Lady under the title, “Mary, Mother of the Church.” Archbishop Jose Gomez, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, led the consecration. Simultaneously, Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki, accompanied by Bishop Jeff R. Haines and me, led a prayer service in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, joining Archbishop Gomez in seeking the Blessed Mother’s intercession for the protection of the vulnerable, the healing of the sick, and wisdom for those working to cure the COVID-19 virus.

Ready to Open the Doors of Worship
Reopening faith-based services is the news many religious leaders and congregations have been waiting for since the Safer at Home orders due to COVID-19 went into effect. But with this news comes a feeling of great responsibility for those leaders who must combine faith with realistic health cautions to make certain congregations are safe as they head back to the pews.
