  • Annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage kicks off Oct. 27 in Ventura County

    In celebration of the 487th anniversary of the miraculous apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego, La Peregrina, a pilgrim image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, will start the annual pilgrimage with visits to parishes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties from Oct. 27-Nov. 3.

    As the Synod of Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment takes place in Rome, a new chapel dedicated to St. José Sánchez del Río, a 14-year-old boy who died defending the Catholic faith following in the footsteps of his two older brothers during the Cristero War in Mexico, will be open through November 10, 2018 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels during Cathedral hours of operations.

    Pulling out his smartphone, Deacon Mark Race showed a video of his wife, Vickie, dressed in a long print dress, a little self-consciously grinning and slow dancing inside the cottage. Watching it made her laugh like a schoolgirl. He was smiling, too.

    As he does every Saturday, Oscar Vasquez arrived one recent September evening to St. Patrick’s Church in North Hollywood with his guitar in tow to sing at Mass. While the rest of the parishioners trickled in and greeted one another, someone offered tamales for sale next to the parking lot. The sound of fast-paced Spanish language conversation filled the air.
