Pro-life youths celebrate life
More than 8,000 Catholic middle school and high school students rallied for “life” at USC’s Galen Center during LIFEsoCal’s fourth annual Christian Service 4LIFE. Youths from across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles attended the half-day field trip designed to inspire students to respect all life, from conception to natural death, and to be active in Christian service. This year’s event — titled “The Path to Sainthood” — featured the life and works of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

L.A. procession and Mass celebrate Peruvian devotion to “El Señor de los Milagros”
More than 1,500 welcomed Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima, Peru, who traveled to Los Angeles to celebrate a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Oct. 16. Archbishop José H. Gomez concelebrated that Mass, along with many priests from throughout the archdiocese. The procession was organized by the Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros — the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles. El Señor de los Milagros is a Peruvian devotion that began in 1715.

Father Gregory Coiro, former teacher and media relations spokesperson, dies
Father Gregory Louis Coiro, O.F.M. Cap., former head of media relations for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, died Sept. 9. He was 63. Known for his intelligence and “quick wit,” Father Coiro made an impression on those who met him, according to his friend of 41 years, Father Ron Talbott.

L.A. Archdiocese’s auxiliary bishops participate in “baby bishops’ boot camp” in Rome
Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishops Robert E. Barron, Joseph V. Brennan and David G. O’Connell were among a group of more than 150 bishops — all of whom were appointed by Pope Francis during the past year — who visited Rome Sept. 10-18 to participate in what some have dubbed “baby bishops’ boot camp.”

Many cultures, one faith
Men, women and children representing the diverse races, cultures and languages that comprise the three-county Archdiocese of Los Angeles will gather at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at 10 a.m. on Sept. 17 to worship together under this unifying moniker, the theme of the 12th annual Mass of Cultures.

Dodgers host first-ever ‘Catholic Night’
On Sept. 2, Dodger Stadium served as the center of a massive Venn diagram of local Catholics and lifelong fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the ballpark hosted its first-ever “Catholic Night.” The baseball team hosted, fittingly, the San Diego Padres on the field, and actual ordained members of religious life and lay people from throughout the tri-county Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the stands.
