    Nov. 5, a brisk early Saturday morning near the merry-go-round in Griffith Park. Diego Ortiz of PAWS/LA was standing in front of a white tarp trying to get the attention of two dozen dogs and their guardians. Since 1989, the nonprofit has been dedicated to preserving the healing benefits of animal companionship for low-income elderly and others facing life-threatening illnesses like HIV/AIDS. But today he was talking about the launching of a new program called Project Petstrong geared to veterans suffering from PTSD. And part of the kickoff was with a two-mile “pets’ hike” in the sprawling urban park.

    The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels received a major infusion of youth the morning of Oct. 26, as elementary and middle school students from 60 Catholic schools around the Archdiocese of Los Angeles gathered for the annual Missionary Childhood Association Mass of Appreciation.

    More than 8,000 Catholic middle school and high school students rallied for “life” at USC’s Galen Center during LIFEsoCal’s fourth annual Christian Service 4LIFE. Youths from across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles attended the half-day field trip designed to inspire students to respect all life, from conception to natural death, and to be active in Christian service. This year’s event — titled “The Path to Sainthood” — featured the life and works of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

    More than 1,500 welcomed Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, archbishop of Lima, Peru, who traveled to Los Angeles to celebrate a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Oct. 16. Archbishop José H. Gomez concelebrated that Mass, along with many priests from throughout the archdiocese. The procession was organized by the Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros — the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles. El Señor de los Milagros is a Peruvian devotion that began in 1715.

  • Father Gregory Coiro, former teacher and media relations spokesperson, dies

    Father Gregory Louis Coiro, O.F.M. Cap., former head of media relations for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, died Sept. 9. He was 63. Known for his intelligence and “quick wit,” Father Coiro made an impression on those who met him, according to his friend of 41 years, Father Ron Talbott.
