As I announced at the Chrism Mass last night, Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has chosen to honor some of our priests in a very special way.
Pope Francis has honored 15 priests with the title “Chaplain to His Holiness,” which means they can now be addressed as “Reverend Monsignor.” They are:

Msgr. Bernard M. Leheny is the new episcopal vicar for the San Pedro Pastoral Region — a role he assumed on March 28 following the formal announcement from the archbishop of Los Angeles.

St. Anthony High School’s annual 5K race raises $100,000
Run at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach broke records, with more than 1,600 people showing up to run and walk in the 5K race. The event also brought in a record-breaking amount in donations: they raised more than $100,000 for the school’s scholarship and financial aid program.

St. Gregory the Great School wins U.S. Navy SeaPerch Underwater Robotics competition
On March 18, St. Gregory the Great School in Whittier won first place in the middle school category of the Los Angeles regional division of the 2017 U.S. Navy SeaPerch Underwater Robotics competition at Fullerton College. They also placed second in the Obstacle Course and Engineering Notebook portion of the competition.

San Gabriel Mission High School soccer team celebrates CIF Division 7 victory
On March 4, the San Gabriel Mission High School soccer team made school history with the victory of its first CIF Southern Section Division 7 Soccer Championship. Senior Ashley Hernandez scored the winning goal during the soccer game, defeating Pacific High School 1-0 at Corona High School.

Msgr. John Foley — a man remembered for bringing laughter, compassion and good sense to those he served during more than half a century of ministry in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — died on March 1. He was 81.
