Worshipers brave cold, wet morning to welcome Easter 2024
The return of intermittent rain on Sunday, March 31 didn’t dampen the faith of worshipers, but it did shift some services and celebrations indoors and sent other participants under tents and umbrellas. The skies cleared briefly for some services, with sunrise celebrations going on as planned on the wet, chilly morning, the holiest day of the year on the Christian calendar.

Archbishop of Los Angeles José Gomez celebrated Holy Saturday with a blessing of the animals on Olvera Street. The blessing has been a tradition on Olvera Street since its founding in 1930, when priests would bless cows, horses and goats at La Placita Church “to help ensure health, fecundity and productivity.” The line for animal blessings began at 1 p.m. in front of Pico House on Main Street.

Blumenthal Honored by Archbishop Gomez
On Feb. 24, Thomas J. Blumenthal, President and CEO of GEARYS Beverly Hills was recognized with an Archbishop’s Award by the Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles. The theme for this year’s event was “An Evening of Grace and Gratitude,” and it was attended by over 900 individuals at the Beverly Hilton. There were five awards presented at this year’s dinner, which recognizes and celebrates the noteworthy contributions of selected Catholic individuals to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
