California bishops support bill to restrict immigration enforcement
California’s efforts to protect immigrants while balancing legitimate public safety concerns is proving more difficult than many thought. SB 54, the California Values Act (de Leon, D-Los Angeles), is at an impasse, at least temporarily, as Governor Brown, Senate President pro temp Kevin de Leon, immigration groups and law enforcement interests grapple with the legislation’s complexities.

‘Moving forward’: Seminary names new faculty, boosts recruiting
St. Patrick’s Seminary & University is welcoming five new professors and expects to admit as many as 15 new seminarians from six dioceses for the upcoming academic year, as new rector-president and vice chancellor Jesuit Father George Schultze reaches out to bishops in several Western states to encourage them to consider the Menlo Park seminary for priestly formation.

Archbishop Gomez celebrates Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City during pilgrimage
Archbishop José H. Gomez is leading 102 pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Los Angles on a pilgrimage to Mexico City. The pilgrims are making the journey to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe which houses the original tilma (or cloak) of St. Juan Diego, which holds the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that appeared in 1531. It is the first Archdiocesan pilgrimage to the shrine.
