**MEDIA CREDENTIALING DEADLINE APRIL 20**

Visalia, CA — Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez will join bishops from throughout California, Nevada and Hawaii to lead delegations of Catholic leaders for the regional V (Fifth) Encuentro gathering at the Visalia Convention Center (303 E Acequia Ave, Visalia, CA 93291) on April 27, 28 and 29, 2018.

The regional V Encuentro will convene a historic ecclesial gathering of more than a 1,000 Hispanic Ministry leaders/delegates from dioceses, ecclesial movements, schools, universities and Catholic organizations from the three states. The selected delegates representing 15 dioceses participated in the local process over the past couple of years. More than 20 bishops are expected to lead diocesan delegations.

The regional gathering is part of the national V Encuentro, a four-year process of evangelization, mission and consultation under the theme Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God’s Love. This year’s theme was inspired by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel). The process has been the catalyst for developing ministries in the Church throughout the nation during the past fifty years.

The goal of the V Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church in the United States can better respond to the Latino Catholic community, strengthen the ways in which the local Church responds to the needs of all the faithful, and empower the faithful to be leaders in their communities as missionary disciples. The regional V Encuentro process will be one of listening and discerning the voices from all the diocesan processes of V Encuentro reflections.

Throughout 2017, the local chapters of V Encuentro developed consultation and evangelization workshops with parish leaders throughout their respective dioceses to reflect on the process and discern ways of becoming missionary disciples to strengthen the entire Church by serving all its members, especially the underserved.

“The vision of V Encuentro is to become more aware of God’s love in our lives and to share it with others, especially those most in need,” said Ernesto Vega, Communications Chair for the Region XI V Encuentro Gathering.

During diocesan V Encuentro gatherings participants shared testimonials of healing, conversion and incorporation to the Church based on the opportunities they have had during the V Encuentro trainings to serve people in need.

“The V Encuentro is a wake-up call for all Catholics, but especially our Hispanic/Latino communities to become agents of renewal for Church and society,” said Jesuit Father Allan Figueroa Deck, a theologian from Loyola Marymount University who spoke at V Encuentro Diocesan Gathering in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and will be speaking to delegates at the regional gathering. “For fifty years, the Encuentro processes have contributed a strong pastoral and social justice agenda to the Church in the United States, one that resonates perfectly with Pope Francis’ call for pastoral conversion and missionary discipleship.”

The Encuentros are supported by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Dating back to 1972, the first Encuentro was thought as a place where lay leaders could express their needs, aspirations and contributions to the Catholic Church. The last national IV Encuentro was held in 2000 in Los Angeles.

Visalia, CA – El Arzobispo de Los Ángeles José H. Gomez se unirá a los Obispos de California, Nevada y Hawai para encabezar las delegaciones de líderes católicos que participarán en el V (Quinto) Encuentro Regional en el Centro de Convenciones de Visalia (303 E Acequia Ave, Visalia, CA 93291) el 27, 28 y 29 de abril de 2018.

El V Encuentro regional convocará a una histórica reunión eclesial de más de 1,000 líderes / delegados del ministerio hispano de diócesis, movimientos eclesiales, escuelas, universidades y organizaciones católicas de los tres estados. Los delegados seleccionados que representan a 15 diócesis participaron en el proceso local durante los últimos dos años. Se espera que más de 20 obispos lideren delegaciones diocesanas.

La reunión regional es parte del V Encuentro nacional, un proceso de cuatro años de evangelización, misión y consulta bajo el tema Discípulos Misioneros: Testigos del amor de Dios. El tema de este año fue inspirado por la Exhortación Apostólica Evangelii Gaudium del Papa Francisco (La Alegría del Evangelio). El proceso ha sido el catalizador para desarrollar ministerios en la Iglesia en todo el país durante los últimos 50 años.

El objetivo del V Encuentro es discernir las formas en que la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos pueda responder mejor a la comunidad católica latina, fortalecer las formas en que la Iglesia local responde a las necesidades de todos los fieles y empoderar a los fieles para ser líderes en sus comunidades como discípulos misioneros. El proceso regional de V Encuentro será el de escuchar y discernir las voces de todos los procesos diocesanos de las reflexiones de V Encuentro.

A lo largo de 2017, los capítulos locales de V Encuentro desarrollaron talleres de consulta y evangelización con líderes parroquiales en sus respectivas diócesis para reflexionar sobre el proceso y discernir formas de convertirse en discípulos misioneros para fortalecer a toda la Iglesia sirviendo a todos sus miembros, especialmente los desatendidos.

“La visión de V Encuentro es tomar más conciencia del amor de Dios en nuestras vidas y compartirlo con los demás, especialmente con los más necesitados”, dijo Ernesto Vega, coordinador de comunicaciones del V Encuentro de la Región XI.

Durante las reuniones diocesanas del V Encuentro, los participantes compartieron testimonios de sanación, conversion e incorporación a la Iglesia con base en las oportunidades que han tenido durante los entrenamientos del V Encuentro para servir a las personas necesitadas.

“El V Encuentro es un llamado de atención para todos los católicos, especialmente nuestras comunidades hispanas/latinas para que se conviertan en agentes de renovación para la Iglesia y la sociedad”, dijo el Padre Jesuita Allan Figueroa Deck, teólogo de la Universidad Loyola Marymount, quien fue uno de los oradores del V Encuentro Diocesano en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, y se dirigirá a los delegados en la reunión regional. “Durante 50 años, los procesos de Encuentro han contribuido con la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos con una fuerte agenda pastoral y de justicia social, que resuena perfectamente con el llamado del Papa Francisco para la conversión pastoral y discipulado misionero”.

Los Encuentros son apoyados por la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos. Desde 1972, el primer Encuentro fue pensado como un lugar donde los líderes laicos podían expresar sus necesidades, aspiraciones y contribuciones a la Iglesia Católica. El último IV Encuentro nacional se llevó a cabo en 2000 en Los Ángeles.
