ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ TO LEAD 102 FAITHFUL OF THE ARCHDIOCESE IN PILGRIMAGE TO SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE IN MEXICO CITY

Archbishop to Present Hundreds of Prayers from Faithful Across Southern California collected at a Mass Celebrating the Contribution of Immigrants in the U.S.

One hundred and two faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will begin a pilgrimage led by Archbishop José H. Gomez to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, in Mexico City. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe houses the original tilma (or cloak) of Juan Diego, which holds the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that appeared in 1531.

“I am really looking forward to this time of prayer and devotion so we can show our love for Our Blessed Mother,” said Archbishop Gomez. “I will be carrying with me and offering the prayers of the whole family of God and especially the prayers that we all have for our families on both sides of the borders. Let’s ask the Virgin to go with us and guide and help us to grow in our love for God and our brothers and sisters.”

At a Mass recognizing the contributions of all immigrants in the U.S. and on TheNextAmerica.org, hundreds of faithful from across Southern California submitted hand-written and digital prayer requests for the intercession of Our Lady Guadalupe. Archbishop Gomez will present the prayers at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe during a Mass for the first Archdiocesan Pilgrimage with the Archbishop on Saturday, July 8 at 8 a.m. PDT (10 a.m. CDT). The Mass will be live streamed at http://archla.org/guadalupemass.

Prayer requests will continue to be collected at TheNextAmerica.org and presented during the next Archdiocesan pilgrimage Mass at the Basilica on July 7, 2018.

For nearly 500 years, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe has been the symbol of hope, peace and love, uniting peoples around the world as one family of God. The Basilica at Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles is home to the only relic of the tilma outside of Mexico City. In the 1940s, a relic of the tilma was presented to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles – from the Archbishop of Mexico City in appreciation and friendship – after Los Angeles Archbishop John J. Cantwell led an important pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in 1941 during the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico, known as Cristero War.

EL ARZOBISPO GOMEZ GUIARÁ A 102 FIELES DE LA ARQUIDIÓCESIS DE LOS ÁNGELES EN PEREGRINACIÓN A LA BASÍLICA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE EN LA CIUDAD DE MÉXICO

El Arzobispo presentará cientos de oraciones de fieles de todo el sur de California recolectados en una Misa que celebró la contribución de los inmigrantes en los EE.UU.

Ciento dos fieles de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles iniciarán una peregrinación dirigida por el Arzobispo José H. Gomez a la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Patrona de las Américas, en la Ciudad de México. La Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe alberga la tilma original (o manto) de Juan Diego, que contiene la imagen milagrosa de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe que apareció en 1531.

“Realmente estoy esperando este tiempo de oración y devoción para mostrar nuestro amor por Nuestra Santísima Madre”, dijo el Arzobispo Gomez. “Yo llevaré conmigo y ofreceré las oraciones de toda la familia de Dios y especialmente las oraciones que todos hacemos por nuestras familias a ambos lados de la frontera. Pidamos a la Virgen que vaya con nosotros y nos guíe y nos ayude a crecer en nuestro amor por Dios y por nuestros hermanos y hermanas”.

En una Misa en reconocimiento de las contribuciones de todos los inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos y en FuturoEstadosUnidos.org, cientos de fieles de todo el sur de California enviaron peticiones de oración manuscritas y digitales pidiendo por la intercesión de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. El Arzobispo Gomez presentará las oraciones en la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe durante una Misa por la primera Peregrinación Arquidiocesana con el Arzobispo el sábado 8 de julio a las 8 a.m. PDT (10 a.m. CDT). La Misa será transmitida en vivo en http://guadalupemassarchla.org/. 

Las peticiones de oración seguirán siendo recolectadas en futuroestadosunidos.org y presentadas durante la próxima Misa de Peregrinación Arquidiocesana en la Basílica el 7 de julio de 2018.

La Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en el centro de Los Ángeles es el hogar de la única reliquia de la tilma fuera de la Ciudad de México. En los años 1940, una reliquia de la tilma fue presentada a la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles por parte del Arzobispo de la Ciudad de México en agradecimiento y amistad, después que el Arzobispo John J. Cantwell de Los Ángeles dirigió una importante peregrinación a la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Ciudad de México en 1941 durante la persecución de la Iglesia Católica en México, conocida como Guerra Cristera.
