–The 90^th Guadalupe Procession and Mass was back in-person after a car-only procession was held in the area of Mission San Gabriel in 2020 with limited attendance, due to the pandemic— 

Archbishop José H. Gomez called Our Lady of Guadalupe a gift to all and reminded hundreds of faithful of Southern California of her message of hope, compassion, unity and love during the annual outdoor Mass in East Los Angeles on Sunday, December 5, the culmination of the 90th Procession and Mass honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, which started at mid-morning with a large attendance after a reduced car-only procession was held in the area of Mission San Gabriel in 2020, due to the pandemic. Themed “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Always forward in mission and hope,” the Procession and Mass commemorated the 490th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe during this special “Forward in Mission” Jubilee Year celebrating 250 years of Catholic faith in the Archdiocese.

“It’s a joy to be reunited this year to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe. Today, especially, we elevate our prayers for the end of the pandemic,” said Archbishop Gomez in Spanish during the bilingual homily he delivered at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Stadium. “We dedicate special prayers for the eternal resto of those who have died and also for those who are sick and for those who assist them.” See full homily below.

“We are gathered here with the desire to go ‘always forward and united in mission and hope,’ which is the theme of our procession this year, and as you know, it’s a historic year. This year we celebrate the 490^th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin to St. Juan Diego at Tepeyac Hill (Mexico).

Archbishop Gomez called the faithful to keep following Jesus. “We need to increase more and more in our love for Jesus, in our understanding of what God wants in our lives, in our desire to do his well,” he said.

The Mass featured the Pope St. John Paul II-blessed image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the image of St. Juan Diego that were hosted by several parishes of the Archdiocese of L.A. since October, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in Catalina Island. It was preceded by a musical tribute to the Virgin of Guadalupe and the handing of the Guadalupano torch by five East L.A.-based Bishop Mora Salesian High School cross country students Jose Cano, Alexander Ramirez, Joseph Melgar (all in 9^th grade), Giancarlo Herrera (11^th grade) and Alex Herrera (12^th grade) who ran a six-mile relay run from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel to ELAC Stadium.

The celebration is the oldest religious procession in L.A., as it was established by Mexican Catholics who fled persecution by the Mexican government during the Cristero War in 1931. The annual celebration commemorating the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe recalls the miraculous apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Juan Diego at Tepeyac Hill, Mexico City, in December 1531, when she left her image on his “tilma” or cloak. Her image has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion, and hope for people around the world.

The annual procession through the streets of East L.A. included a float contest with participation of Guadalupano parish groups and Catholic schools, and Aztec dancers. Local artists selected three float winners based on several categories, including best representation of this year’s theme with winning floats receiving technology grants of $1,000 for third place, $2,000 second place, and $3,000 for first place, all provided by the Catholic Communication Collaboration (C3). The winners are Epiphany Parish in South El Monte (first place), St. John the Baptist Parish in Baldwin Park (second place) and Our Lady of Solitud Parish in East L.A. (third place).

Starting in mid-October, the images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, known as La Peregrina, and Saint Juan Diego began a pilgrimage to visit dozens of parishes and Catholic cemeteries, including St. Catherine of Alexandria in Catalina Island, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and Calvary Cemetery & Mortuary, where hundreds of faithful had the opportunity of veneration.

La Peregrina, a pilgrim image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, is an exact digital reproduction of the original image in Mexico City’s Basilica, which has been blessed and touched to the original image. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and one of St. Juan Diego were gifts hand-delivered to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by Monsignor Diego Monroy, then Rector of Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City. Her image has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion, and hope for people around the world.

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Guadalupanos todos,

Que alegría estar juntos este año para nuestra celebración de Na. Sa. de Guadalupe. Hoy, de manera especial elevamos nuestras oraciones a Nuestra Señora por el fin de esta pandemia.

Pedimos especialmente por el eterno descanso de los que han fallecido y pedimos también por todos los que están enfermos y por los que los atienden.

Nos reunimos con el deseo de ir ‘siempre adelante y unidos en misión y esperanza’ Éste es el tema de nuestra procesión este año. Y, como sabemos, es un año histórico.

Este año celebramos el 490º aniversario de la aparición de la Virgen a San Juan Diego en el Tepeyac. ¡Cuatrocientos noventa años de gracia!

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe fue enviada por Dios para anunciar la evangelización, no sólo a México, sino a todo el continente americano. Todos los países de América están bajo su manto, bajo su amorosa protección y cuidado.

Today, we move forward in hope and in our mission! That is our theme for this year’s procession. And this is a historic year. In a couple of weeks we will celebrate 490th anniversary of the Virgin’s apparition to St. Juan Diego at Tepeyac. Four hundred and ninety years of grace!

En el Salmo responsorial de hoy, cantamos: “Grandes cosas has hecho por nosotros, Señor y estamos alegres”.

El Señor ha hecho maravillas, él nos ha dado el gran don de su Hijo, Jesucristo. Y lo ha hecho, gracias a la cooperación de la Santísima Virgen María.

Dentro del maravilloso plan de Dios, María fue concebida sin la mancha del pecado original, y fue conservada libre de pecado durante toda su vida. Dios la estaba preparando para ser la Madre de nuestro Salvador, la Madre de Dios.

Pero María tuvo que darle su sí a Dios. Cuando el Ángel vino a verla, ella tuvo que tomar una decisión sobre lo que iba a hacer con su vida.

María eligió a Dios, ella escogió dedicar toda su vida para entregarle a Jesús al mundo para que todos pudieran conocer el su amor.

In God’s great plan, Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin, and she was kept free from sin her whole life! God was preparing her to be the Mother of our Savior, the Mother of God!

Mary said yes to God. She chose to dedicate her whole life to bringing Jesus into the world, so that everyone could know his love

En el Evangelio de hoy, se nos presenta a San Juan Bautista. Y vemos que la vida de San Juan tiene el mismo propósito que la vida de Nuestra Santísima Madre.

El Evangelio nos dice “vino la palabra de Dios en el desierto sobre Juan”. Igual que cuando la Palabra de Dios vino a María, a través del ángel Gabriel.

Y así como lo hizo María Santísima, San Juan se consagró a esa Palabra de Dios. Dios lo llamó para que desempeñara un papel especial en la historia de la salvación.

Y San Juan renunció a todo lo que él estaba planeando, a todo lo que pensaba que quería para su vida. Él lo entregó todo con el fin de vivir para Jesús.

In the Gospel today, we are introduced to St. John the Baptist. And we see that John has the same purpose in his life as Our Blessed Mother had in her life.

God called John to play a part in the history of salvation. And John gave up whatever he was planning, whatever he was thinking that he wanted for his life. He gave everything up to live for Jesus!

Del mismo modo, Dios llama a cada persona. Él los llama a cada uno ustedes y me llama a mí. Y nosotros estamos llamados a tomar la misma decisión que la que tomaron la Santísima Virgen y San Juan Bautista.

Dios quiere que cada uno de nosotros desempeñe un papel especial en esta hermosa misión de traer a Jesús al mundo.

Como pudimos escuchar, Juan Bautista predicó la “penitencia para el perdón de los pecados”. Él solo quería llevar a la gente a Jesús, para que “todos los hombres vean la salvación de Dios”.

Este es el sentido de este tiempo santo del Adviento. Jesús quiere nacer en nuestro mundo. Él quiere derribar todos los muros que las personas levantan alrededor de sus corazones para impedir que Dios entre en sus vidas.

Cada año, este tiempo de Adviento nos invita seguir siempre adelante; a seguir esforzándonos más por ser mejores, a tratar de que imitar a Jesús cada día de nuestras vidas.

San Pablo habla de esto en la segunda lectura. Él hace una hermosa oración por nosotros. Dice: “Ésta es mi oración por ustedes: Que su amor siga creciendo más y más y se traduzca en un mayor conocimiento y sensibilidad espiritual. Así podrán escoger siempre lo mejor y llegarán limpios e irreprochables al día de la venida de Cristo”.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, tenemos que crecer cada vez más en nuestro amor a Jesús, en lo que Dios quiere para nuestras vidas y en nuestro deseo de hacer su voluntad.

Pidamos que siempre seamos conscientes de que formamos parte de algo maravilloso, del plan de Dios para cada persona y para el mundo entero.

Jesús nos está llamando a seguirlo, así como lo siguió la Virgen María, tal como lo siguió San Juan Bautista. Y Jesús quiere que hagan en su vida lo mismo que ellos hicieron en la de ellos.

We need to increase more and more in our love for Jesus, in our understanding of what God wants in our lives, in our desire to do his will.

My brothers and sisters, we are a part of something so big, so beautiful. We are the children that God is gathering by the Word of his Holy One. This is what it means to belong to his Church.

Así que, queridos hermanos y hermanas, vivamos para Jesús. Y cada día de nuestra vida, busquemos oportunidades de llevar a Jesús a los demás, en nuestros hogares, en el trabajo, en las cosas pequeñas de nuestra vida diaria. 

¡Queridos guadalupanos, vivamos para Jesús, vivamos para llevar a Jesús a los demás! Tal como lo hizo Nuestra Santísima Madre.

A Maria Santísima de Guadalupe le pedimos hoy que nos ayude a desempeñar nuestro papel en esta hermosa misión de salvación: viviendo ‘siempre adelante y unidos en misión y esperanza’
