March 21, 2023  |  Around the ADLA  |  No Comment

Most of the stories of Bishop David O’Connell touching the lives of immigrant families and children have never been told publicly — perhaps because there are too many of them. But in the weeks since O’Connell’s Feb. 18 murder at his home in Hacienda Heights, the world has heard plenty of new ones.

  • Religious Education Congress 2023: Embrace Grace
March 17, 2023  |  In The News  |  No Comment

Over the course of three days, February 24-26, 2023, thousands descended upon Anaheim, California for the annual Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. It is the largest gathering of Catholic educators, catechists, and ministers in the nation. This year’s theme: Embrace Grace fueled the many workshops, presentations, and keynotes. In his keynote, Bishop Joseph Espaillat, an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of New York, made his message very clear. “My intention is to light a fire — a fire in us,” the bishop shared with the packed assembly that gathered in the arena.

When David O’Connell was named Auxiliary Bishop in 2015 for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, a press conference was held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. It was my first year working at the cathedral, and we were already planning a major episcopal ordination for not one but three new auxiliary bishops: Joseph Brennan, Robert Barron, and David O’Connell. Bishop O’Connell was noticeably nervous.

  • LA Religious Ed Congress: A ‘here comes everybody’ vibe
March 8, 2023  |  Archbishop Gomez, In The News  |  No Comment

The Los Angeles Religious Education Congress used to bill itself as the largest annual gathering of Catholics in the United States. But over the years attendance had dropped from the highs of 30,000 to 40,000 people to about half that — and that was before COVID-19. Similarly, there was a general sense that it wasn’t as “progressive” as it once had been, especially after the appointment of Archbishop José Gomez in 2011.
