    Los Angeles, Calif., Nov 30, 2013 / 06:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez and local political leaders have held a 24-hour fast to pray for immigration reform and to remember families who are separated from each other at Thanksgiving.

    On Tuesday, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez gathered a group of civic and labor leaders in a chapel at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to announce they will conduct a 24-hour fast between Dec. 1-3 in solidarity with the Fast for Families pro-immigration reform group, which is entering the third week of its fast on the National Mall in Washington.

    On this day, Dec. 18, the seasoned 72-year-old pastor of Resurrection Church in Boyle Heights had just received the good news: The California Department of Toxic Substances Control, in an emergency measure, ordered the Vernon car battery recycling plant that the pastor and other community activists, elected officials and residents had been battling for years to clean up its toxic lead and metal deposits.
