    This Sunday, bishops from around the world will gather in Rome with Pope Francis for an Oct. 5-19 synod that will examine marriage and the family.

    As we know, families and marriages face many challenges in our culture. So I hope you will join me in praying that the Synod will cause the world to once more see that marriage and family are sacred realities, gifts that God has given to us for our happiness and for the stability of our societies.

  • Alverno High School Students Take the Oath of Office

    More than half of the Alverno High School student body recently took the Oath of Office during Alverno’s annual Inauguration on the terrace.

    Modeled after the government of the United States, Alverno High School boasts a unique system of government that allows for more than 50 percent of students to be involved. Rather than the traditional “Associated Student Body” model, Alverno High School’s government is overseen by the Alverno Constitution and students are considered citizens of the Alverno Student Union. The Alverno Student Union includes the federal, legislative, and judicial branches as well as individual state governments.

  • Football: Busy Thursday this week thanks to Yom Kippur

    Yom Kippur, the holiest day for the Jewish faith, is on Friday, and lots of high school football teams have switched their games to Thursday night.

    Players who are Jewish will appreciate the scheduling change. One of the biggest changes was made by Alemany High, which switched its scheduled Mission League showdown with Chaminade to Thursday night under urging from the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

  • St. John Bosco’s Matt Katnik shows he’s an athlete with class

    t’s one of those wonderful sports moments captured on video that makes everyone laugh. Matt Katnik, the 6-foot-4, 305-pound St. John Bosco lineman, was trying to celebrate a touchdown with 165-pound sophomore receiver Kristian Gilbert. A chest bump sent Gilbert tumbling to the ground in a true sports blooper moment.

    “He’s really skinny. That’s where the problem is,” Katnik explained.

  • International seminarians: Bringing the ‘world church’ to L.A.

    “All roads lead to Rome,” the saying goes, but many roads also lead to St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, where 15 of its 93 seminarians are international students.

    Hailing from countries that include Mexico, Holland, Nigeria, Spain, Uganda and the Philippines, these students bring a special “richness” to the seminary, says Dr. Paul Ford, professor of theology and liturgy.

    Respect Life Week, a joint project of the Department of Catholic Schools and the Office of Life, Justice and Peace, takes place Oct. 6-10 at schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — a prelude to the annual Christian Service 4Life event Oct. 14 in Carson.

    During Respect Life Week, Catholic elementary, middle and high school students are immersed “in the understanding of the dignity of every human person and our call to proclaim the Gospel of Life in our community,” said Kathleen Buckley Domingo, LIFE Coordinator in the Office of Life, Justice and Peace.

  • Century-Old Crucifix Stolen from SoCal Church for Second Time

    A Southern California congregation is praying for the return of a more than 100-year-old stolen crucifix taken from an Oxnard church for the second time in two decades.

    A man with a shaved head and bushy mustache entered Santa Clara Catholic Church in the 300 block of South E Street on Wednesday afternoon and left with the crucifix, according to a news release by the Oxnard Police Department.

    His first world was the small Guatemalan town of Santa Eulalia, where he was born to a Mayan family who converted to Catholicism and only spoke Q’anjobal, one of the 23 Mayan languages. His second world was the city of Huehuetenango (Guatemala), where he learned Spanish.

    “Governor Brown quit messing around…shut Exide down!” chanted the crowd at a press conference called last week to urge the governor to sign into law a pair of bills aimed at regulating an embattled acid-lead battery recycling plant and one of the state agencies charged with permitting and monitoring its performance.
