    National Catholic Schools Week 2015 was observed in dioceses around the country Jan. 25–31. This year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” focused on the important academic, faith-building and societal contributions provided by a Catholic education.

    Archbishop José H. Gomez, together with auxiliary bishops, priests and lay faithful, celebrated the many women and men who, through their consecrated lives, have given service to the Church. The annual Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels honored these women and men and their religious congregation, particularly recognizing those marked 80, 75, 70, 65, 60, 55, 50, 40 and 25 years of service.     I’m a public school boy. In fact, I didn’t go to Catholic school until I was 26 — when I entered the seminary! I didn’t know any nuns growing up. Religious life was a mystery to me. However, I do know that many of you reading this did attend Catholic school and were taught by sisters. Perhaps you grew up in or currently attend a parish run by religious priests.

    Nativity Church is nestled in residential Torrence, surrounded by houses on all sides. Two weeks after Christmas, a drive down the neighborhood’s Engracia Avenue showed the influence of this parish: nearly every other house still had its front lawn Nativity scene lit and on display. Pastor Fr. Hung Tran says this is a yearly event.
