By both instinct and formation, Archbishop José Gómez of Los Angeles isn’t a man given to public displays of emotion. Born to middle class parents in Monterrey, Mexico, he trained as an accountant and even joined the Catholic group Opus Dei, whose members are usually noted more for sobriety and restraint than great fits of enthusiasm.

Concluyó ayer la Convocatoria de Líderes Católicos “La Alegría del Evangelio en Estados Unidos”, que tuvo lugar en Orlando, Florida, entre el 1ro. y el 4 de julio, con la participación de casi tres mil laicos, 300 sacerdotes y 100 religiosas y 150 obispos. La jornada estuvo marcada por un profundo espíritu misionero, profundizando la idea de ir a las periferias para estar cerca del que sufre, del abandonado, del que siempre fue relegado.

Convocation of Catholic Leaders: ‘More Than a Physical Location’
On this third and final full day of the “Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America” in Orlando, Florida, the more than 3,000 participants turned their focus to the peripheries. Under the title of “Work and Witness,” the day was notable for several seemingly unrelated but intersecting events: a Eucharistic Procession, the culmination of this year’s Fortnight for Freedom (the U.S. Bishops’ annual campaign to raise awareness about the need to safeguard religious liberty) and concentration on peripheries.
