Across the Los Angeles region, Christians are observing the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday — the day after “Fat/Shrove Tuesday” or Mardi Gras in some cultures — marks the official start of the solemn 40-day season of Lent: a time of deep prayer, repentance and sacrifice in the Christian faith, that leads to Easter. Many Catholics, evangelicals, Lutherans, and other Christian denominations traditionally observe the day with fasting, tithing, and abstaining from meat or other luxuries.

Mass and Anointing of the Sick – Observance of World Day of the Sick and the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes: The gathering begins with a Rosary, noon, and followed by Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrating the Mass, 12:30 p.m. The bilingual Mass includes anointing of the sick and blessing of caregiver hands with water from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Attendees receive Lourdes water and a holy card. The Mass is co-presented by the Order of Malta – Los Angeles. Members of the Order of Malta will collect attendees’ prayer intention cards and place the cards in a petition box at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes during their annual pilgrimage in May 2024. Lent comes early this year. In fact, Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14, and Lent begins.
The Church gives us this season of grace each year as a privileged moment to concentrate on our spiritual lives, and to really work on making progress in our ongoing conversion to Christ.
