    Pope Francis has elevated Mission San Buenaventura to the status of a Minor Basilica, the first basilica in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

    Francisco ha concedido el título de basílica menor a la Misión San Buenaventura, en Ventura o San Buenaventura (California), fundada por San Junípero Serra en 1782, a quien él mismo canonizó en 2015. Todo un gesto de desagravio al misionero franciscano, civilizador del suroeste de Estados Unidos, cuyas estatuas han sido objetivo preferente de Black Lives Matter y grupos indigenistas durante la ola de violenta revolución cultural que vive el país.     “With all praise and glory to God, Pope Francis has elevated Mission San Buenaventura to the status of a Minor Basilica, the first basilica in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.” The announcement of the papal honor was made on the Mission’s website on Wednesday, the feast of St Bonaventure reported Vatican News.

    The city council of Ventura, California has voted to remove a statue of St. Junipero Serra from the grounds of city hall, amid riots and protests in other California cities that have resulted in the destruction of several statues of the saint in recent months.

    Fire broke out in the early morning hours of July 11 at Mission San Gabriel Archangel in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, destroying the roof of the historic structure and doing major damage to its walls and recently-refurbished pews. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the local police and fire departments, although as the church fire occurred amid the backdrop of assaults on religious images and even churches across the U.S., some fear arson is a possibility. The fire was reported at 4:30am, and although the fire department quickly extinguished it, significant damage was done to the structure and its contents.
