    spanish architect rafael moneo will be presented the golden lion for lifetime achievement at the venice architecture biennale, which is set to open in may 2021. the decision was made upon the recommendation of the event’s curator hashim sarkis, who is planning a small exhibition inside the giardini featuring a selection of models and illustrations detailing moneo’s work. based in madrid, moneo has been awarded numerous prizes and distinctions including the pritzker prize in 1996, the praemium imperiale, and the inaugural soane medal in 2017.

    Over the course of the pandemic, certain powerful moments of national and worldwide prayer stand out. A year ago in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop José H. Gomez reconsecrated the United States to Mary, Mother of the Church, from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. And last March, Pope Francis stood alone in St. Peter’s Square, holding a monstrance high as he blessed the Church and the world with the Blessed Sacrament via a livestream broadcast.
