CATHOLIC SPANISH-LANGUAGE NEWSPAPER VIDA NUEVA RECEIVES 11 AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN HISPANIC PUBLISHING
Vida Nueva, the monthly Spanish-language publication of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,
received 11 José Martí Publishing Awards at the 2013 National Association of Hispanic
Publications’ annual convention. The honors included four gold (first place), four silver and
three bronze awards.
Writer Alicia Morandi was honored with a gold award for Outstanding Hispanic Success Story,
“Los 82 años de Dolores Huerta,” and two bronze awards for Outstanding Community
Service/Health Article, “Las víctimas olvidadas del alcohol,” and Outstanding Education Article,
“El honor de la esclavitud moderna.”
Writer José Luis Sierra earned a silver award for Outstanding Latin America Cultural Article,
“Hambre en las montañas.”
Editor and photographer Victor Alemán earned two gold awards for Outstanding Color Photo,
Overall, “La luz de la vida,” and for Outstanding Black and White, Overall, “Cesar Chavez:
Católico y profeta de la no violencia,” which also earned a silver award for Outstanding Cultural
Photo Essay.
The monthly also won a gold award for Outstanding Design, Newspaper; two silver awards for
Outstanding Less Than Weekly Newspaper and Outstanding Front Page Design; and a bronze
award for Outstanding Community Photo.
The José Martí Publishing Awards are one of the oldest and largest Hispanic media awards
within the United States, presented by the NAHP, a nonprofit trade advocacy organization
representing Hispanic print publications in the United States serving 41 markets in 39 states, the
District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with a combined circulation of over 14 million.
“I feel humbled and proud that Vida Nueva, a Catholic publication, is being recognized among
mainstream Hispanic publications, winning 11 awards in the national arena,” said Aleman.
