CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES TO RAISE MONEY FOR PHILIPPINES RELIEF DURING ‘PRAYERS FOR THE PHILIPPINES’
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles will kick off “Prayers for the Philippines,” a fundraiser
involving students at Catholic elementary schools across the three-county Archdiocese, at a press
conference at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at Cathedral Chapel School, 755 S. Cochran
Ave. in West Los Angeles.
“The recent typhoon in the Philippines has touched our hearts profoundly,” said Rev. Monsignor
Terrance L. Fleming, director of the Archdiocesan Mission office. “We ask that all schools
participate in some way to show solidarity in prayer and support for the Philippines in time of
need.”
During “Prayers for the Philippines,” school children at more than 200 Catholic elementary
schools in the Archdiocese will each be asked to donate $1 (larger donations are welcome) and
pray at school one day of the week through Nov. 22.
“We are inviting schools to select one day through Friday, Nov. 22, to gather in the classroom,
school yard or auditorium in prayer for the children and their families in the Philippines,” said
Dr. Kevin C. Baxter, the Archdiocese’s Superintendent of Elementary Schools.
The fundraiser is being organized by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles-Missionary Childhood
Association “Children helping Children” program. An anonymous donor, who has contributed in
the past to the Archdiocese’s fundraisers for emergency aid in Haiti and Japan, has pledged to
match each dollar raised up to $100,000. One hundred percent of all funds will be wired to the
Philippines on Dec. 5.
Donations can also be made by Nov. 29 with a check payable to “Missionary Childhood
Association-Philippines Fund” and mailed to:
