ANNUAL STUDENT ART EXHIBIT AT THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS CONCLUDES MAY 1ST

The third annual Robert Graham Memorial Student Art Exhibit at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will conclude next Wednesday, May1. The exhibit features works of art by 70 students from 10 Catholic high schools in the archdiocese. All are invited to the final week of this year’s exhibit.

“We are proud to support the tremendous talent of our Catholic high school students,” said Msgr. Kevin Kostelnik, Cathedral Pastor. “Visitors to the Cathedral have enjoyed and celebrated these wonderful works of art and self-expression by our featured young artists over the last two months. We look forward to having even more students share their inspirational works at next year’s exhibit.”

The ten Catholic high schools participating in this year’s exhibit are Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary, Crespi, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Immaculate Heart, Louisville, Loyola, Marymount, Mayfield Senior School, Providence and St. Francis. The exhibit features artwork encompassing a variety of mediums from pen and ink to ceramics.

“To have my artwork displayed in the Cathedral has been incredible,” said Kyle Moreno, a senior at Loyola High School who has had his art included in the exhibit for three consecutive years. This year Moreno created a mixed-media piece made of acrylic and industrial cardboard titled

The Road to Golgatha, which depicts the path Jesus walked to Calvary (photo attached).

Krystal Orellana, a junior at Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary in Montebello submitted an acrylic landscape painting on canvas titled

Beauty of Nature Itself. “There are so many things that are not man-made that are so beautiful,” said Orellana. “That’s what inspired me to create this painting.”

“Honoring art through the spiritual and artistic expressions of every student artist is one of the goals of the Cathedral Fine Arts Committee,” explained Committee Chair Gayle Garner Roski. “We hope to have all Catholic high schools in Los Angeles represented in the exhibit.”

The exhibit is named in honor of the noted sculptor Robert Graham, who designed the Cathedral’s Great Bronze Doors. Steven Graham, son of the late sculptor who died in 2008, said, “I think it’s fantastic that the Cathedral is promoting student artwork. It’s something that would make my father very happy.”
