ARCHDIOCESE PUBLICATION ANGELUS WINS 22 AWARDS AT 2024 CATHOLIC MEDIA CONFERENCE, INCLUDING BEST NEWSLETTER AND BEST IN-DEPTH WRITING

Angelus, the official magazine of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, won 22 awards, including four first place for best in-depth writing, best newsletter (Always Forward), best regular column: art. leisure, culture and food, and best column: general commentary, at the Catholic Media Association’s 2024 Catholic Media Conference, held in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 18-21, 2024.

“At a time when quality Catholic journalism is needed more than ever in the Church and in the world, these awards are a big encouragement,” said Pablo Kay, Angelus’ editor-in-chief. “We’re thrilled to be recognized for our work, which would not be possible without the quiet, creative efforts of our Angelus editorial staff and the support and vision of our publisher, Archbishop José H. Gomez.”

The competition included Catholic publications from across the U.S. and Canada, and recognized work done in 2023. In total, Angelus was awarded four first place, five second place, three third place, and 10 honorable mention accolades.

Angelus won four First Place awards in the category of Best Writing In-Depth, with the article “Searching for a saint: The legend of Louisiana’s Charlene Richard,” by Rafael Alvarez; Best Newsletter Always Forward; Best Regular Column – Art, Leisure, Culture, and Food “Desire Lines,” by Heather King, and Best Regular Column – General Commentary: “Intersection,” by Greg Erlandson.

Second Place accolades included Best Guest Column/Commentary, “The Currency of the Heart,” by Jennifer Hubbard; Best Regular Column – Family Life, “With Grace,” by Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie; Best Essay – Diocesan Magazine, “The Benedict Generation,” by Elise Italiano Ureneck; Best Original Poetry, “From guilt to grace,” by Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie; and Best Writing – Analysis, “A mystery mission,” by John L.Allen, Jr.

Angelus received four Third Place awards in Best Essay – Diocesan Magazine, “Here come the ‘Tradwives’,” by Elise Italiano Ureneck; Best Reporting on Catholic Education, “Small School, big difference,” by Ann Rogers; and Best Review, “A self-conscious quest,” by Joseph Joyce.

Ten Honorable Mentions include Best Editor of the Year (English) Pablo Kay, Best Magazine Angelus, Best Cover – Color (Large), Best Coverage – Disaster or Crisis, Best Essay – Diocesan Magazine, Best Interview, Best Reporting on Vocation, Best Review, and Best Directory – Archdiocese of Los Angeles Catholic Directory (2023-2024).
