ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ REMINDS THE FAITHFUL THAT OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SHOWS US THE WAY TO LOVE DURING TRIBUTE TO THE VIRGIN AT THE CATHEDRAL

—The Virgin of Guadalupe was serenaded on eve of her Feast Day by a Mariachi, regional Mexican singers and a Filipino American cantor –—

Archbishop José H. Gomez welcomed faithful to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles during the annual midnight Dec. 12 Mass to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and reminded them how she shows us the way to Jesus, so we can “carry out our daily duties with simplicity and love.” This year is the 492nd anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego, which is celebrated in Mexico and other countries, including the Philippines.

“Our Lady came to see Saint Juan Diego, just as she visited Saint Elizabeth, in the Gospel we heard tonight. She comes into our lives bringing us the most precious gift of God’s love; she comes to bring us Jesus,” said Archbishop Gomez. “I think that like Juan Diego, we are all trying to carry out our daily duties with simplicity and with love, that is, with love for Jesus and the people He has entrusted to our care, especially our loved ones and our families,” said Archbishop Gomez in his homily. Please see below full homily as prepared in Spanish. “Dear brothers and sisters, Our Lady cares for us and calls us every day with that same tenderness, with that same love. Always remember it and keep it in her Heart. We are, each and every one, very beloved sons and daughters of Mary, very valuable to her, as well as to Jesus.

“Our Blessed Mother continues to illuminate our lives with her light.

“When we love Jesus, when we realize that He loves us, the whole world is transformed before us, everything seems different to us. We feel that the perpetual light of God’s love surrounds us.

“So tonight, as we stand under our Mother’s compassionate gaze and look into her eyes, let us reflect on this wonderful truth: Jesus Christ loves us so much that He came to share our hopes and dreams and to offer his life for us.

“Just as she did with Juan Diego, the Most Holy Mary entrusts each of us with a task. She has a message that she needs us to spread and she is sending us to tell the whole world about Jesus and His love and salvation.”

The annual celebration began at 6 p.m. with Aztec and Ballet Folklorico dancers on Cathedral’s plaza, followed by a time for veneration of the relic of the tilma or cloak of St. Juan Diego in the interior chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared 492 years ago, in 1531, the humble native Juan Diego’s tilma. The Cathedral is home to the only relic of the tilma outside of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. At 10 p.m., the celebration continued inside the Cathedral for the Rosary, with invited guests accompanied by the Cathedral Spanish Choir. The Rosary was  followed by a presentation by Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuellar. The musical tribute, or serenata, began at 10:45 p.m. with a Mariachi performance and special guest singers invited to serenade the Virgin and sing “Las Mañanitas,” a traditional Mexican birthday song to honor the Virgin on her Feast Day.

The artists that serenated “La Morenita” are:

Graciela Beltran, singer of regional Mexican music, also known as “La Reina del Pueblo,”  (The Queen of the People) by her fans. She has earned several accolades in Mexico and the U.S. and has been nominated to the Grammy Latino, Billboard and Premio Lo Nuestro, among others. Mexican American singer-songwriter.

Angélica Cecilia Mata, from the city of Boyle Heights, who strives to keep Mariachi music alive by teaching mostly young girls at The Mariachi Conservatory in Los Angeles, where she studied at a young age.

Jacky Ibarra, a Los Angeles native, who has been serenading the Virgen de Guadalupe for more than a decade. Gustavo Hernández, member of the Mariachi Garibaldi of Jaime Cuellar and also a classical singer, who has been part of several philarmonics and symphonies in California and across country.

Monette De Guzman, a Filipino American cantor and performer at parishes and choir member of the annual Religious Education Congress of the Archdiocese of LA.

Rosy Oros, a local singer and songwriter, who promotes Mariachi music in Mexico and the U.S. through her own magazine, “Iconos.”

Marilyn Odessa specializes on Banda, which is part of the regional Mexican music, performing in Mexico and the U.S. with renowned artists such as Paquita la del Barrio, Banda MS, and with her mother, Marisela Esqueda. The celebration recalls the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Diego at Tepeyac, Mexico, in December 1531, when she left her image on his tilma, or cloak. The relic, or piece of the tilma inside the Cathedral, was a present to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles from the Archbishop of Mexico City in appreciation and friendship after Los Angeles Archbishop John J. Cantwell led a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City in the early 1940s, during the Cristero War. Given the natural agave fibers used to make the tilma, experts say it is miraculous that the relic at the Cathedral in Los Angeles, and the rest of the tilma in Mexico City, have survived for almost five centuries.

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Con gran alegría nos reunimos esta noche para honrar a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Como sabemos, la historia de las apariciones de la Virgen de Guadalupe se inicia cuando San Juan Diego madrugaba para ir a la iglesia, y se encontraba en camino para ir a rendirle culto a Dios.

Juan Diego apenas emprendía su día ordinario, disponiéndose a cumplir con sus deberes, cuando sucedió el milagro del Tepeyac.

 

Y pienso que al igual que Juan Diego, todos estamos tratando de realizar nuestros deberes diarios con sencillez y con amor, es decir, con amor a Jesús y a las personas que él ha confiado a nuestro cuidado, especialmente nuestros seres queridos y nuestros familiares.

Recordamos la historia de la primera aparición. El sol apenas salía cuando Juan Diego iba caminando por entre los cerros, y en eso escuchó el sonido de un canto. Era como el canto de muchos pájaros, y cuando el canto cesaba, era como si las colinas les respondieran.

Y, de modo inesperado Nuestra Señora lo llamó, diciéndole: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito”.

Nuestra Señora vino a ver a San Juan Diego, tal y como visitó a Santa Isabel, en el Evangelio que escuchamos esta noche. Y Ella viene a nuestras vidas trayéndonos el don más precioso del amor de Dios: viene a traernos a Jesús.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Nuestra Señora nos cuida y nos llama todos los días con esa misma ternura, con ese mismo amor.

Recuérdenlo siempre y consérvenlo en su corazón. Somos, todos y cada uno, hijos e hijas muy amados de María, muy valiosos para ella, al igual que para Jesús.

Cuando Juan Diego vio a Nuestra Señora por primera vez, ¡no podía creer lo que veía!

Su vestido brillaba como el sol, era como si, en torno a ella hubiera resplandores de luz, moviéndose a su alrededor, todo parecía brillar “como con resplandores del arco iris en la niebla”.

María se apareció tal como se escuchamos en la primera lectura de la Misa de esta noche: “Una mujer envuelta por el sol, con la luna bajo sus pies y con una corona de doce estrellas en la cabeza.”.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Nuestra Madre Santísima continúa iluminando nuestras vidas con su luz.

Nosotros no tenemos visiones, ni escuchemos el canto de los pájaros, ni vemos la tierra adornada con un arco iris.

Pero cuando amamos a Jesús, cuando nos damos cuenta de que él nos ama, el mundo entero se transforma ante nosotros, todo nos parece diferente. Sentimos que la luz perpetua del amor de Dios nos rodea.

Así que, esta noche en que estamos bajo la mirada compasiva de nuestra Madre y la miramos a los ojos, reflexionemos sobre esta maravillosa verdad: Jesucristo nos ama tanto que vino a compartir nuestras esperanzas y nuestros sueños y a ofrecer su vida por nosotros.

Acudamos con confianza a nuestra Señora de Guadalupe esta noche y digámosle una vez más que estamos aquí para servir, que queremos ofrecer nuestra vida como una ofrenda de amor a ella y a Jesús.

En la mañana de aquella primera aparición, Nuestra Señora le dijo a Juan Diego: “Escucha, hijo mío, el más pequeño, Juanito, ¿a dónde te diriges?”

Hermanos y hermanas, esa pregunta está también dirigida a cada uno de nosotros, a ustedes y a mí.

Cuando María trae a Jesús a nuestras vidas, ella traza un nuevo camino y una nueva dirección para nuestras vidas.

Tal como lo hizo con Juan Diego, María Santísima, nos encomienda a cada uno de nosotros una tarea. Ella tiene un mensaje que necesita que difundamos y nos está enviando a hablarle al mundo entero acerca de Jesús y de su amor y salvación.

Nosotros somos mensajeros de María. Somos mensajeros del amor de Dios y del amor de la Virgen Maria.

Y Nuestra Señora nos hace la misma promesa que le hizo a San Juan Diego. Ella nos dice:

“Y ten por seguro que mucho lo agradeceré y… te glorificaré; y mucho de allí merecerás con que yo retribuya tu cansancio, tu servicio con que vas a solicitar el asunto al que te envío”.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas míos, sigamos sirviendo a María. Sigamos sirviendo a Jesús a pesar de lo cansados que podamos estar.

Ella conoce nuestros problemas y las cosas que nos agobian y que llevamos en el corazón. Y si confiamos en ella y la amamos, si acudimos a ella, ella siempre abrirá nuestros ojos para que veamos al fruto bendito de su vientre, Jesús.

¡Que Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!
