ARCHDIOCESE ANNOUNCES SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS AFFECTED BY THE ‘DEADLIEST DISASTER’ IN MAUI’S HISTORY
—-Collection to be held during Masses the weekends of August 19-20 and August 26-27—-
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has asked parishes to add a special collection during the weekends of August 19-20 and August 26-27, 2023, in solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters in Maui affected by the wildfires. The donations will be managed by the Los Angeles office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, one of the four Pontifical Mission Societies that supports worldwide underserved communities.
“As the death toll from the devastating wildfires on the island of Maui, Hawaii continues to climb, officials have confirmed this to be the deadliest disaster in the state’s history. We are reaching out to our Archdiocesan parishes and communities to join together to offer prayer and financial support for all whose lives are being touched by this devastation,” said the letter signed by Sister M. Anncarla Costello, Archdiocese’s Chancellor, and Msgr. Terrance Fleming, executive director of the Archdiocese’s Mission Office. The letter was sent to all parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
“In a telegram addressed to the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Pope Francis expressed his deep sadness at ‘the loss of life and the destruction caused by the wildfires’ in Hawaii and assured those affected by the fires of his prayers,” stated the Archdiocese’s leaders in the letter.
