Statement on the Death of Richard J. Riordan
Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los AngelesI am saddened by the loss of Richard Riordan. His passing marks the end of an era here in the city and in the Church here in Los Angeles.
Mayor Riordan was a devoted public servant, a generous philanthropist, a wise civic leader, and a fine Christian gentleman, who worked hard to make life better for those he served, especially for the poorest Angelenos.
His legacy will be lasting in the Church. We will not forget his guidance and support in building our Cathedral and his vision and leadership in the area of Catholic education. I could always count on his advice and counsel and was always encouraged by his enthusiasm and optimism for the Church’s mission. He will be missed.
May God grant him eternal rest and give peace and consolation to his family and loved ones.
