NEW DOCUMENTARY ABOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S FUTURE SAINT TO AIR ON EWTN ON SATURDAY

To honor the memory of Venerable Bishop Alphonse Gallegos and to commemorate his birthdate on February 20, 1931, a new documentary on his life story will air on February 20 at 2:30 PST on EWTN as an episode of They Might Be Saints, a program about future saints from the United States and the search for canonization miracles. The documentary was filmed in April 2019 and it includes footage of such places as San Miguel Church in Watts, where the Venerable Bishop Gallegos, also known as the “bishop of the barrio” in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, grew up and was pastor of Cristo Rey Church in Los Angeles, where he also served, Saint Augustine Priory in Oxnard with artwork and relics of Bishop Gallegos; and relevant places around Sacramento, such as Bishop Gallegos Square, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe where his tomb is located, and his former residence on T Street. Highlights of the program include recreations of the life of Bishop Gallegos, such as him visiting a family, interacting with youth at Chevy Chase Park and preaching to the faithful at Mass.

Archbishop José H. Gomez is among those interviewed in the documentary, discussing Gallegos’ service in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Also interviewed was Bishop Jaime Soto of the Diocese of Sacramento, who related how Gallegos is still fondly remembered and regarded in high esteem by many in that diocese, including his work as the first director of Hispanic Affairs of the California Catholic Conference (CCC), and the 10 years he spent as auxiliary bishop of the diocese before his tragic death.

Other interviews included Bishop Gallegos’ niece Paula Loya, Fr. Samson Silloriquez, postulator for his canonization, and other members of the Order of Augustinian Recollects (OAR) who have worked on his cause for canonization. 

The future saint was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and moved with his family to Watts, Los Angeles, at an early age. He suffered from poor vision, myopia, his entire life even after several successful surgeries. He entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects and made his religious profession in 1951. In 1958, he was ordained a priest at Tagaste Monastery in Suffern, New York, where he served.

He spent several years serving as a priest in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, until moving to Sacramento to take his position with the CCC. He was appointed auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Sacramento in 1981 by St. Pope John Paull II. He died 10 years later in a tragic car accident. In 2005, the cause for his canonization was opened, and in 2016, Pope Francis named him venerable.

Para honrar la memoria del Venerable Obispo Alfonso Gallegos y para conmemorar su fecha de nacimiento el 20 de febrero de 1931, un nuevo documental sobre la historia de su vida se transmitirá el 20 de febrero a las 2:30 pm PST en EWTN como un episodio de They Might Be Saints (Ellos podrían ser santos), un programa en inglés sobre futuros santos de Estados Unidos y la búsqueda de milagros para su canonización.
