89TH ANNUAL PROCESSION AND MASS IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE AND ST. JUAN DIEGO CELEBRATED TODAY VIRTUALLY DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC 

–Faithful continue to participate in nine days of virtual prayer and reflection leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12–

Faithful throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles united today in prayer and hope for the historic Procession and Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego. The Procession and Mass was celebrated today virtually via livestream so that families can honor “La Morenita” safely from home amid increased COVID-19-related public safety measures on facebook.com/lacatholics and lacatholics.org/guadalupe.

“Today, we ask Our Lady of Guadalupe for those who are sick, for the dying, for the ones that have lost their life and their families, for all those whose lives have been hurt and disrupted,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez during his bilingual homily found below. “We ask especially ask her intercession to bring us deliverance from this plague of the coronavirus.”

The celebration, themed “Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of Healing and Hope,” is the oldest religious procession in Los Angeles established in 1931 by Mexican Catholics who fled persecution by the Mexican government during the Cristero War. The theme reflects on the importance of the presence of our Blessed Mother in our lives, especially during these challenging times.

“In this Advent, Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is still praying for us, still bringing her Son to us. So let Jesus come again — into our hearts, into our world,” continued the Archbishop in his homily. “Let him enter into your lives. Share your burdens and joys with him. Feel his love, listen for his voice.”

The celebration began with a mile-long car procession by members of the Guadalupano groups representing more than 30 parishes that participate annually in the Procession and Mass. The cars in the procession were decorated by individual households with flowers, images and messages honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego commemorating their feast days. The historic procession began at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel and led down Ramona St. to Mission San Gabriel. Typically, more than 40,000 faithful attend the Mass and Procession annually.

A special outdoor Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Gomez in the Mission parking lot to accommodate for social distancing. Mass was concelebrated by Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell for the San Gabriel Region of the Archdiocese, Auxiliary Bishop Alex Aclan for the San Fernando Region of the Archdiocese, Father Juan Ochoa, administrator at Christ the King parish in Los Angeles and president of the Commission for Our Lady of Guadalupe, Father Chris Bazyouros, pastor at St. Marcellinus parish which houses the pilgrimage images throughout the year, and Father John Molyneux, pastor at Mission San Gabriel.

The collection during Mass will benefit the fund to rebuild the Mission San Gabriel, the first mission in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, after the fire this summer. The faithful are still able to support the rebuilding fund for the Mission online via text message at (626) 522-4957.

A digital video novena leading the faithful virtually through prayer and reflection for nine days leading up to the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is available onfacebook.com/lacatholics and lacatholics.org/guadalupe. Each day leading up to December 12, new videos in English and Spanish will be shared about the significance of Our Lady of Guadalupe and living the Catholic faith in the domestic church.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will host its annual musical tribute and Mass honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe virtually this year via livestream on December 11 at 8 p.m., so that families can celebrate safely from home. The celebration dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe will feature several artists serenading Our Lady, a Mariachi tribute, praying of the Rosary and Holy Mass celebrated by Archbishop José H. Gomez. The livestream at beginning at 8 p.m. will be available on lacatholics.org/guadalupe and facebook.com/lacatholics.

More than 500 years later, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe housed at the Basilica in Mexico City, remains untouched by age or decay. Traditionally, millions visit the miraculous image at the Basilica to celebrate her feast day to celebrate her promise to help and protect all mankind.

¡Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, queridos guadalupanos!

Nos reunimos hoy en este Segundo Domingo de Adviento, todavía dentro de la pandemia del coronavirus, y nos reunimos para nuestra celebración anual de la fiesta de Na. Sa. de Guadalupe.

Hoy acudimos especialmente a nuestra Madre Santísima, confiando en su maternal intercesión, pedimos sus oraciones por aquellos que están enfermos, por todos los que han fallecido y por sus familias. También por todos aquellos cuyas vidas han sido afectadas por la pandemia.

Le pedimos que siga intercediendo por nosotros, que nos mantenga cerca de su Corazón Inmaculado. Y especialmente le pedimos que nos libere de esta plaga del coronavirus.

Today, we ask Our Lady of Guadalupe for those who are sick, for the dying, for the ones that have lost their life and their families, for all those whose lives have been hurt and disrupted. We ask especially ask her intercession to bring us deliverance from this plague of the coronavirus.

Como escuchamos que San Pedro nos dice en la segunda lectura: Dios Nuestro Señor nos traerá “un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva, en que habite la justicia”.

Así que hoy pedimos la sanación, la transformación de nuestro mundo, para que haya paz y justicia. Y rezamos para que Dios siga cambiando nuestros corazones para que cada vez estemos más cerca de Jesus y sepamos imitarlo en nuestra vida diaria.

Como sabemos, este tiempo del Adviento es un tiempo en el que estamos llamados a una conversión más profunda.

El Evangelio nos dice hoy que las personas que se acercaron a Juan el Bautista para ser bautizados, “reconocían sus pecados”. Lo que significa es que se daban cuenta de que necesitaban hacer un cambio para vivir de acuerdo al plan de Dios para ellos.

Y cuando escucharon al Bautista decir: “Preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus senderos”, sus palabras llegaron a sus corazones.

Entendieron que el sendero que recorrían no era el correcto. Ellos se dieron cuenta que no estaban viviendo plenamente para Dios, que no estaban viviendo del modo que Dios quería para ellos.

Nosotros también sentimos lo mismo. Reconocemos que tenemos debilidades y que somos capaces de cometer pecados. Somos conscientes de que podemos recorrer mejor el camino que Dios quiere para nuestra vida.

Y al escuchar hoy el llamado de San Juan Bautista, nos damos cuenta de que nosotros también debemos de cambiar algunas cosas en nuestras vidas.

Y, cada año, el Adviento es un tiempo en el que tenemos que examinar nuestro corazón y reflexionar acerca de nuestra relación con Dios.

Hoy debemos de preguntarnos ¿Estamos viviendo para el amor de Dios? ¿Estamos siguiendo el camino que Jesús quiere para cada uno de nosotros?

En nuestra sociedad, se hace mucha presión para que no tengamos en cuenta las cosas de Dios, para que pensemos que podemos vivir sin él. Es fácil colocar a Dios en un segundo plano.

Mucha gente piensa que no tienen tiempo para rezar. Es muy triste porque entonces se tiene la pena de olvidarse de Dios.

A eso se refiere Juan Bautista cuando dice que tenemos que “arrepentirnos”. Arrepentirse significa cambiar la manera en la que vivimos nuestra vida. Arrepentirse significa: volver a poner a Dios en nuestra vida.

As we know, this Advent season is a season in which we are called to a deeper conversion. We know that we are not fully on the path that God wants for our lives. And as we hear the Baptist’s call today, we know that we need to make a change in our lives, too.

So, this time of Advent is a beautiful moment that we have to examine our hearts, to think about our relationship with God. So, let’s ask the grace to begin again with more enthusiasm in our prayer life and our service to our brothers and sisters.

El profeta Isaías nos dice en la primera lectura de hoy: “Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo, dice nuestro Dios. Hablen al corazón de Jerusalén”.

Dios quiere hablarnos —personalmente— a cada uno de nosotros durante este tiempo de Adviento. La voz que clama en el desierto del Adviento es una voz de ternura, una voz llena de amor.

Es la dulce voz que nos dice: “¡Vuelvan a Mí! Vengan a mi casa. Vivan en Mi amor”. Dios sólo tiene pensamientos de bondad, palabras de consuelo y de cariño para cada uno de nosotros.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, el Adviento es un tiempo en el que reflexionamos en la bondad y paciencia de Dios con nosotros.

Y es un tiempo en el que escuchamos la promesa de que Dios viene a estar con nosotros. Y, desde luego, si le abrimos nuestro corazón, él estará con nosotros en este tiempo y siempre.

Así que, en este Adviento de la pandemia, en este Adviento que ocurre en un tiempo en el cual todos nos sentimos preocupados e inseguros, volvamos al Señor. Dejemos que nuestro Señor venga a nuestras vidas.

Ese fue el mensaje de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe hace ya casi 490 años. Vino al Tepeyac para recordarnos que ella llevó en su seno a Jesús. Ella llevó en sí misma a Jesús para que él pudiera ser nuestro Salvador, nuestro Redentor.

En este Adviento, María todavía sigue intercediendo por nosotros, todavía sigue trayéndonos a su Hijo Jesus.

Entonces, queridos hermanos y hermanas, permitamos que Jesús venga nuevamente a nuestros corazones, a nuestro mundo.

Permítanle entrar en sus vidas. Compartan con él sus preocupaciones y sus alegrías. Experimenten su amor, escuchen su voz.

In this Advent, Mary, our Lady of Guadalupe, is still praying for us, still bringing her Son to us. So let Jesus come again — into our hearts, into our world. Let him enter into your lives. Share your burdens and joys with him. Feel his love, listen for his voice.

Sepan que Jesús está con ustedes, incluso en los tiempos difíciles. Estén siempre atentos a las señales del amor de Dios. Tenemos que ser más conscientes de la presencia de nuestro Señor en nuestra vida y de que El camina siempre con nosotros.

Pidamos pues la protección del Inmaculado Corazón de la Virgen de Guadalupe en estos tiempos difíciles y siempre. Y renovamos nuestro propósito de seguirla acompañando, durante estos días del Adviento, junto con San Jose, al nacimiento de su hijo, Jesus, en esta Navidad.

¡Que Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!
