ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES PUBLICATION VIDA NUEVA WINS GOLD AS THE BEST MONTHLY SPANISH-LANGUAGE NEWSPAPER IN THE U.S. FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
For the third consecutive year, Vida Nueva, the official monthly Spanish-language publication of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, was recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) as the best monthly Spanish-language newspaper in the United States. The publication won five José Martí Media Awards, the oldest and largest Latino mainstream media contest in the nation, for its photojournalism and articles with a local and Latin American perspective.
“The awards are a great recognition to teamwork and to the dedication of all those who have collaborated with the newspaper throughout all these years,” said Victor Aleman, the publication’s editor for nearly three decades.
The national organization announced the awards at its annual virtual convention held on Sept. 21-25, where Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) was a featured speaker.
Vida Nueva earned a second Gold Award for the outstanding article in the category of Immigration, “Mucho para perder … pero sin embargo ganó,” by Alicia Morandi, the monthly’s writer and assistant editor.
The publication won three Bronze Awards in the categories of health article (Robert W. Dellinger), cultural article (Paulina Herrera) and national political article (Pilar Marrero).
In July, Vida Nueva received seven awards from the Catholic Press Association’s 2020 Catholic Media Virtual Conference. The national organization recognized both the English-language archdiocesan publication Angelus News and Vida Nueva for high quality reporting, analysis, photojournalism on social justice issues and religious liberty.
According to NAHP, Vida Nueva is among the Catholic Spanish-language publications with highest circulation in the country. The organization reports that Spanish-language publications serve 41 markets in 39 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with a combined circulation of more than 23 million. NAHP members produce more than 15 billion pages of information annually, which are preferred by Hispanics for their purchasing decisions, making them five times more effective than any other media.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles began publishing Vida Nueva in 1991. The publication routinely wins national awards, including the Best Spanish-Language Monthly Newspaper (2015, 2011, 2010, 2003, 2018, 2019, 2020) in the U.S. from the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP). The same organization honored Vida Nueva with a first place as the best Spanish-language weekly in 2001, when the newspaper had a weekly release; six first place honors as a bimonthly Spanish-language publication in the 1990s, when Vida Nueva ran as a bimonthly publication.
